MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Got my tickets booked for Monday afternoon! Will be back on here at about 6:00pm to see what people think.
Dear God, please don’t let it be a turkey.
Hope it's better than that last dung.
I'm going tomorrow morning to the 9:30 showing. And I agree with Nobeerinthefridge.
Seeing it on Sunday - mixed reviews so far, seems like it's going to be more Force Awakens than Last Jedi.
That's either a massive shame, or a massive bonus depending on where you stand.
6:15 pm tomorrow - my son has tickets through work !
Could see it midnight tonight, but I've booked 6:30pm tomorrow.
Sat morning... 🙂
7am tomorrow, after work xmas drinks tonight. will let you all know if I stay awake or not...
6am tomorrow
Early reviews aren't promising 🤦♂️
Early reviews for TLJ were very positive though, so there's that.
Monday 20:00, I know its going to be a stinker like the others in the sequel trilogy
Friday afternoon. 3D Imax.
I might as well go all in to try and make a spectacle of it.
Friday evening. Please please please let it be good!
I'm savouring the good reviews and sticking my head in the sand at the bad ones.
3 stars from Empire 😩 and their opening line reveal the Emperor is still alive and later on reveal he 'more machine than man'
.
Now is Rey the illegitimate daughter of Luke or Leia? My money's on Leia having a dirty shag behind Han's back and the shame drove her to cast her away forgotten on Jacoo (spelling?)
Got tickets to see it tomorrow night at our local 80's style cinema.
the Emperor is still alive and later on reveal he ‘more machine than man
Like Darth Maul in the cartoons and the end of Solo then, must have run out of good ideas and just copied more from other parts of the starwars universe!
Now is Rey the illegitimate daughter of Luke or Leia
I thought in one of the other sequel movies they said she wasn't the child of anyone special?
The trailer reveiled the Emperor was still lurking.
I thought in one of the other sequel movies they said she wasn’t the child of anyone special?
They did - but, this could've always been a red-herring - given the apparent attraction between them & the Star Wars universe it'd make sense that they're related.
Who knows where Luke has been putting his lightsaber between ROTJ & TFA
The trailer confirmed the Emperor was in it not that he was still alive.
If Rey a isn't a Skywalker the title of the film is about Ben Ken but he's the baddy... So is his 'rise' the return to the light or does the title refer to Rey?
the illegitimate daughter of Luke or Leia
My first read was she was the daughter of "Luke AND Leia"
That would be a bit messy for Disney
It gets a thumbs up from me. A couple of good cameos in there. I didn't get all the jedi voices, or recognise Vilanelle. The first half was a bit slow and pointless but the last hour and a half wrapped things up nicely. The resurgence of the Palpatine was managed well but I think it would've been a bit pony if it hadn't already been signposted in the trailers. Was the woman on Tatooine at the end Enfys Nest (my son pointed it out)?

recognise Vilanelle
Yup
It was ok, not amazeballs. I watched at the BFI imax and found some of the framing of the close up shots a bit rubbish.
I thought it was excellent.
The first 10-15 minutes were a bit clunky as they basically cleared up the mess Rian Johnson made.
But once that was done it was excellent. Relentless pace, big set pieces were fantastic, nice cameos. The McGuffins were pointless as usual. It actually has a strong Indiana Jones feel to it. Would not be surprised to see Oscar Isaac popping up in a reboot of Indy!
Final emperor bit had a couple of eye rolling moments but it is star wars after all.
Carrie Fisher bits were well done and if she was CGI'd I couldn't tell.
Enjoyed it, as you might suspect everyone seems to be related in some way.
One the way out kids were shouting stuff like;
"Poe I am your second cousin"
"Finn I am your step dad"
"Maz I am your neighbor" etc etc.
Mrs foo, who is not a Star Wars fan liked it because she said it was more like Star Wars. I'm still processing what that means. But she did say the story was easier to follow, certainly tied up the plot lines.
And it really did feature a walking talking acting Carrie Fisher, also you might clock a young Luke and Leia looking much more realistic than previous episodes.
Loved 4,5 and 6
Never seen 1,2 and 3
Fell asleep in the force awakens as was fairly boring
thought last jedi was rubbish (obvs Space Leia WTF)
loved Rogue 1 and Solo
Seeing Rise on sunday
What will my review be like....?
Liked it. Bit messy jumping around from planet to planet in the first 3rd but overall pretty good. Ties up nicely.
she said it was more like Star Wars
Which is exactly what it should be.
The formula is simple, and this was definitely a greatest hits movie, which is a good thing. I read one review which said it was closest to what Lucas wanted to achieve with the original trilogy which was those Saturday matinee films and series he loved. This was all of that.
Yes there's a few clunky moments, yes there was a bit too much obvious exposition in the first 15 minutes, yes there was token "woke" nods but it did exactly what a star wars movie should do
Pants film. Episodes 7-9 total waste of time. Bring back George Lucas.
OH my...utter horse shit.
I'd rather not ramble on about the magic of the originals, but id rather sit through a session of Eastenders,I think the the writers have a lot in common.
I'm going to see it with my cousin on Saturday, and his kids. Which bookends nicely as we went to the very first one together when we were little kids. He is a huge fan and I am a bit worried he might cry.
Went to see it last night.
I enjoyed it - as previously said some of it was cleaning up Johnson's crap from the last one.
Nice to see it all wrapped up in the end.
Stoked that Chewy finally got his medal lol
Some good cameos - although didn't spot Villanelle - where was she?
It's still no 'Empire but felt/looked more like Star Wars than some of the others.
A solid 8/10 from me.
Villanelle – where was she?
Rey’s Mum
Saw it last night. Was left wholly deflated and unsatisfied. The whole movie to my eye was basically an exercise in cramming as many references to the original three movies and others in as possible. More like 2 hours of compilation rather than a proper movie. The story line was disjointed and didn't really make sense and the ending was just crap...what after all that Rey decides to go and live a solitary life back on Tatooine in Uncle Owen's old farm? Also the kiss between Ben and Rey...well I never got any romantic vibes between them from previous movies and couldn't suss out if they were related or not (did pop out for a quick wee at one point so might have missed something there). The way they revealed Palatine was clumsy...they could have stretched it out through the movie and had a big reveal...
My fault for maybe having too high an expectation in the first place. I'll see it again with the family so give it one more chance.
Went to see it last night with my 11 yr old son.
Was some clunky bits in it but there's clunky bits in every star wars film.
Generally thought it was good and 'finished' it off nicely. Although I am kind of disappointed that a Skywalker didn't win in the end. It looked and sounded good.
The first 3 will always be the best, but my lad loved it so I'm happy I got to share it with him.
Also the kiss between Ben and Rey…
Yeah that wasn't needed.
what after all that Rey decides to go and live a solitary life back on Tatooine in Uncle Owen’s old farm?
I took that to be she was just taking the Skywalkers home and laying them to rest.
What a terrible movie.
Everything turned up to 11; no engagement between the viewer and the story. Had no idea what was going off half the time.
Really boring battles and out of the frying pan into the fire scenarios dragging the story to nothing more than computer game plotting.
Lack of imagination throughout and clunky dialogue, and little suspense or sense of adventure.
All the reveals and cameos were yawn inducing. Had a feel of an 'in-between' Start Wars film rather en epic resolution.
Awful. Struggled to stick with it to the end.
J.J Abrams is a good film-maker - felt like a lack of interest from him.
What with this and the Irishman (not in the same League but disappointing) is there anything redeeming about Q4 2019?
I liked it, sue me. Tied things up nicely, moved along at a fair old pace, didn't get bogged down in over explanation and enough overused Star Wars tropes to get people moaning about it.
Still room for a few surprises and a new lightsaber or two. Big ass space battle and Wedge, if only briefly.Best of the 3 new ones I would say
Just watched at Keswick Alhambra kept me thoroughly entertained for over a couple hours, that’s entertainment for you. Haven’t seen the second one though
I went with very low expectations after the last 2. Much better than expected, tied things up nicely, I liked the nods back to the past. Cheesy bits, the kiss, the horses on a star destroyer and every star destroyer having a planet killing gun, but at least there wasn't 30 minutes of pointless casino rubbish. Quite liked the mirror of Anakin's fall to the dark side with Kyle's redemption.
Enjoyable overall but way to many why would you do that moments, and pervy Lando?
No complaints. Loved it. **** the critics.
I wasn’t sure about the Lando bit at the end. That was too pervy to have been meant. I know he was a cool handsome charmer back in 1979, but in 2019 he came across as a pervy grandad.
I enjoyed that
OK, I'm not sure if it's good or not, but I bloody loved it. I am, fair to say, in a sort of whacked out emotional state anyway but some bits really got me- the first film's callbacks to the originals were too remakey, this one managed to bring back loads of iconic locations and kit without just making it like a fanfic or a disney ride imo. Pulling the x-wing out of the sea, awwww yeah. I don't know if that's literally Leia's Tantive IV lifting out of the jungle, but awwwwwwww yeah anyway. And that final scene with the binary suns again...
Also rather liked "Hey, this is what the rebellion would be like if they were actually competent"- put a shit hot but also experienced pilot in the millenium falcon, give it at least one actual crewman as well as just the scooby gang, and an actual proper jedi that's not just had their first jedi lesson, and a hard-as-nails ex soldier rather than people who shoot by flapping... Also, hey, why are we supposed to be surprised that the rebellion, a literal underground terrorist organisation, has criminals in it? Anyone think that smuggler Han Solo never smuggled drugs in his smuggling days in his smuggling spaceship that's clearly set up for smuggling small high value stuff? And the lightsaber battle on the wrecked death star was pretty awesome, nice for cinemas to really let the sound systems show off.
Yeah a lot I would do differently- like, "here are the reinforcements" was an epic moment but seriously, that's waaaaay too many ships. And though most of it felt and looked properly starwarsy, some bits didn't so much. Ironically something the prequels nailed, they might have been crap but they looked and sounded perfect.
Absolutely mystified why Maz Kanata basically does nothing though. And pretty much every Leia scene was completely offkilter- not because she's dead and that's totally weird, but because of the scripting and the filming, I got the feeling some of that was added late to clarify stuff. Too much exposition/stuff we see only so we can see it again later like the healing of the monster thang (though that was still a nice scene) And Daisy Ridley still mostly doesn't look like she's ever used a lightsaber before. Adam Driver's excellent in it, thoroughly enjoyed him just jedi-wrecking people... "Oh hi Knights of Ren, prepare to be reminded why you are the sidekicks". And there are some actual good jokes!
The chewbakka-switcheroo was fairly awful. And playing C3PO's memory loss for laughs was grim, we know he's the annoying member of the team but he knowingly puts his entire personality on the line, basically his life, for the rebellion and everyone's a total **** about it. It's like they've never seen Wall-E. Actually, that's my absolute least favourite thing about it.
Pointy robot was cute.
TBH I also thought there's a lot of good in Force Awakens. A lot of crap, too, but there's some really awesome moments and a lot of it looks just amazing.

Thought he was being grandfatherly to a kid that he knew had no family, personally. OK, sort of sleazily grandfatherly, but not pervily.
So Ashoka Tano is dead, this makes me very sad
I thought Lando was a being a perv, my wife thought he was being avuncular.
The plothole I struggled with was where Rylo Ken got the Tie fighter he had at the end. He was left stranded, but seemed to have called and Imperial Uber to follow Rey. How?
Ashoka Tano is dead
Of course she is; all the Jedi were killed between ep 3 and 4. Even the younglings!

Of course she is; all the Jedi were killed between ep 3 and 4.
She wasnt a Jedi then and appeared safe and well in rebels till she died when a sith temple fell on her after a fight with Vader, Erza bought her back in a jedi temple. After the battle of endor she went off to find Ezra

I'm guessing the supreme leader of the first order could get a tie fighter
You'd also imagine in that case he could get Richard E to back off a back, too.
You’d also imagine in that case he could get Richard E to back off a back, too.
He looked busy going to help Rey.
Muppets' Christmas Star Wars.
Excellent. Most enjoyable.
I liked it, it I think best left not analysed but remembered for the grin on a 10 yo face at lasers, spaceships and lightsabers. We were all that age once.
Villanelle
Jeez, missed that but I can’t take Greg Grunberg seriously as he reminds me of a comedian but not sue who - Dom Joly, Adam Richman... I don’t know.
Best bit was when anagallis junior aged 9 shouted Chewie finally got his medal, he was very upset when he thought he'd died though!
I went with the family, and we all enjoyed it. That’s what Star Wars always was.
I'm pretty sure that Chewie has "finally" gotten his medal about 5 times now.
I thought it was good.
My friend who I saw it with felt they laid on the fan service far too thickly (Wedge!) & there were a lot of setups for spinoffs (Zorii Bliss, apparently) and for future instalments.
I’m pretty sure that Chewie has “finally” gotten his medal about 5 times now
I thought the one previous occasion was the MTV awards and wasn’t canon?
Loved it. My mate loved it and both my kids are still on the ceiling a couple of hours later and that’s what it’s all about.
I've no reason to believe this is true but I've decided to headcanon it that Maz gave Chewie Han Solo's medal. It's just a bit random otherwise to think she's finally gone oh! Doh! I was supposed to give this to him back in 1977 but it's been packed up with the christmas decorations all this time.
Solid 8 out of 10 for me. I’m not a massive Star Wars fan, can tolerate the first 6 movies, really like force awakens, less so tlj but enjoyed this as much as force awakens I think. Probably prefer rogue one to all of them and solo I quite enjoyed also. Good popcorn film to sit back and relax over the Xmas break
So Ashoka Tano is dead, this makes me very sad
Me too. Although I hadn't considered this until you pointed it out. I'm still hoping for an appearance with Wren on the TV show. (Actually I'd quite like a 3 part mini series on the quest for Ezra).
I still want to know who the old woman on Tatooine is.
very good entertainment. Really enjoyed. It was a bit "Lets go here, no, There, NO here, lets run around pointlessly..." in the first half, but pretty cool, nevertheless. Yellow lightsabre was cool, Han's Medal given to Chewie, Richard E Grant made for an excellent Imperial General and the Emperor was just epic.
8/10
Snakes on a... Horses on a Star Destroyer, and they have Tusks!
The first half seemed to be a massive course correction from the last film. It took a serious change in direction to get in the direction it wanted to be going.
After that, it was good entertainment.
I really enjoyed that.
It started with all the pace and subtlety of a Motörhead song and I found myself thinking, ah we’ll slow down in a bit for some trade conference or for Finn to head off on some pointless side mission but no it’s ‘Ace of Spades’ start to finish.
I get the impression they wanted to murder TLJ within the first few mins, and they did then it was a decent stab at pleasing old sods like me and younger viewers. The story is, not so much complex as long told very quickly.
They got the whole Gang back, Han, Leia, Luke, Mace, Vader, Obi One, Obi Two, Yoda, ****in’ Ewoks the lot!
Obi One, Obi Two
Stealing that one.
Just watched it. Expected it to be fairly rubbish but it was actually quite good.
First bit was a bit meh as others have said especially some of the forced banter and obvious statements of obviouness but as soon as Bobbie Gillespie was properly on screen and the story crystallized it became a lot better. Loved the wrecked death star set piece
An 8 out of 10 for me too and I thought he was being protective and avuncular not creepy
Question
The bit where Finn tells Rey he needs to tell her something as they're in the quicksand stuff.
He never actually got round to telling her anything did he?
Thought it was excellent, J.J done it proud
He never actually got round to telling her anything did he?
JJ abrams has suggested that he was going to tell her he's Force sensitive...As you do when you're being sucked underground by quicksand.
He never actually got round to telling her anything did he?
Luuurve?
i did think that horsey lady and he had some chemistry but not sure if that’s just placed there because they are both effectively clones / ex stormtroopers. I wondered whether there was a brother / sister thing on the way.
Disappointed that we never saw the long anticipated kiss between Finn and Po.
Disappointed that we never saw the long anticipated kiss between Finn and Po.
Here's some Po/Tinky Winky action to cheer you up.
Lady in desert: "What's your name?"
Rey: "Rey".....looks into distance for an interminably long time.
LiD: Thinks.....well this one's a bit weird.
Rey: Carries on looking into the sun for a bit....."Skywalker."
LiD: Thinks.....Well why didn't you say so love.
I am still confused how the pink power ranger got into Star Wars.
Loved it. I didn't think there was overuse of previous characters or whatever, I thought they were used effectively and wrapped the story up well.
The force use on this film was incredible. Loved the way Ben and Rey communicate and could take/pass things/fight.
My only criticism was where they had to use cgi and unused footage of Carrie. I felt it was just too obvious, all the one line answers and shots of her back or just facial expression, juts kind of made it weird. Not sure how it could have been done another way tho.
Quite looking forward to watching it all again sometime.
There was a lot to enjoy about this film, the action scenes were great.
What led them to those scenes not so much.
Travel between planets was too fast, where did Palpatine come from?
Did Poe & Finn learn nothing from the last movie?
Why was Hux a spy?
Poor Rose got Jar Jar'd.
