subaru forester, decent ones start at a lot less than 4k, use any money you save for fuel as they are a little thirsty.

They are also absolutely bonkers to drive- yeah ‘slow’ getting up to speed but over the moors A and B roads they are the nuts.

Pre-2006 they are also mechanically simple for when you need parts (I used a breaker for parts for mine).
