  • Recovery from a broken collar bone :-(

    Broken on the 20th of Dec, the consultant said it was at the "good" end of the bone.

    So, will I be riding at Hit the North (20 Feb)? Anybody have any experience of this injury?

    Fitness: Gonna be stepping up the running from the end of Feb, and got a turbo trainer on the way. But, anybody know how to use it? Looked at a few sites and they all call for specialist bikes, cadence and HRMs. Can't really be bothered with all that, is there a "go like a bugger for 10 min, take it easy for 10min" sort of regime for the less serios 'athlete'?

    This and any other advice V much appreciated as always,

    If its not a bad break you'll be back on your bike in no time.

    Mine was 6 weeks healing time and exactly 6 weeks to the day of breaking it, I was doing a DH race in the Alps 8)

    I did megavalanche 8 weeks after breaking mine in 2008.
    however, folks at hospital didn't see the break at the time, so I continued physio and never went for any of that immobility stuff.
    putting it in a sling is the worst thing you can do, muscle wastage etc.

    Hate to disagree, dasnut, but if I hadn't kept mine in a sling I would have had to keep popping the ends of the bone back together every five minutes.

    (Instead of every ten, with the sling.)

    Sorry mate but thats absolute bollocks. I broke mine landing after a trick went wrong kitesurfing and i guarantee without a sling keeping the arm immobile i would have been in complete agony and the bone would not have had a chance to heal.

    3 weeks after the break i was doing RPM classes and light riding.
    6 weeks after break i was back to full riding and kitesurfing but strangely enough it took a while for me to stop being a mincer and get over the fear of doing myself more damage. The brain is a funny one 😯

    Missed the whole of the summer,what summer there was anyway with a complete fracture of my right elbow!still a bit crook'ed and told that's as good as it will get,still a bit painfull too,not stopped me riding though!

    To be honest having seen you ride, best you give Hit the north a miss 🙂

    Mine took ages to heal. Everytime 4 weeks I saw the consultant and he said leave it 4 more weeks. After 4 months it got operated on. But I am apparently in the minority and most heal fully within 12 weeks.

    As far as a turbo goes, a friend of mine who races hates the thing but if he can't get out and ride he uses the turbo flat out for 1 hour as this is as long as he can do before the boredom sets in. Interval training works well on a turbo. Shorter invervals at high intensity then ease off for twice as long, repeat, repeat, repeat, sit on sofa!!

    Nice one JR, just the sort of simple training schedule I can follow. Off I go!

    Beings, I should be OK as long as I avoid 40 kph road descents in the worst weather of the year…

    Bust mine and was riding to physio in 3 weeks.

    OTOH, a mate bust his, and after another 5 months or so, he had to have it pinned 'cos it wasn't knitting (wasn't that bad a break either AFAIA)
