Really out of touch with mobiles . how much do I need to spend to buy a phone that’ll take half decent video and photos.don’t need any other bells and whistles.

Check the Sony Ericsson CyberShot range, the C905 is a good phone if a bit bulky, 8.1mp, gps, wifi etc, has a good review on cnet as well. You can get one for less then £100 on eBay.

If You want to go really cheap then get a Sony Ericsson K810i or C902, 3.2mp, xenon flash, takes good photos but movies are just as any other phone. Very tough phone as well. Should be able to get one for between £30-50.

Comparing photos taken on a Nokia 5800 (3.2mp, led flash) to photos taken with my OH’s K810i, Sony is better imho. It won’t be as good as a digital camera, even my old Lumix is way better in terms of quality and details but if You don’t want to carry two things than Sony C905 would be a good choice.
