Saw this guy supporting Blackalicious back in 2003. Not really the same style, but he's by far my favourite hip-hop discovery:

Edan sounds quite cool – I've pretty much got the entire Quannum back catalogue, quite like bands like Apscii.

Excellent work, STW! I'll be working through the suggestions here tomorrow. In the meantime, look up some of the Mick Boogie mixtapes, and the Wildabeast / Portishead album called Wildahead Portibeast. 8)

+1. Buck is a genius IMO. Synesthesia is probably his most straight-up hip hop album. Hugely talented guy.

A few no doubt mentioned already, but…

Aesop Rock's album Float (fairly old) is out of this world, produced by Blockhead and the best thing either have done

    Personal Journals by Sage Francis

    the first Latyrx album

Antagonist Survival Kit by sixtoo (his Duration EP is also amazing)

    Iron Galaxy by Cannibal Ox

Black Mamba Serums by Bigg Jus

Company Flow's Funcrusher Plus is where a few of these people first surfaced

Seen Infesticons mentioned – their first album is ace and plenty of Mike Ladd's other stuff is quality, esp his Welcome to the Afterfuture lp. Avoid his experimental jazz stuff though!

Herbaliser and DJ Vadim stuff is all good

    Braintax

    Lewis Parker

J-Live's recorded output is all good, but never quite matches his phenomenal live shows

Anything touched by the hand of Madlib is usually great, but an all-time favourite of mine is the Madvillainy album – Madlib and MF DOOM both at the top of their game.

DOOM's own output is a bit variable to say the least (he is nuts though so fair enough) but his Vaudeville Villains (released as Viktor Vaughn), Take Me To Your Leader (as King Geedorah) and DangerDoom (with the massively overrated Dangermouse) are all brilliant. The thing with Kool Keith though – promised so much, delivered so little.

yeah second that evilnine feedback – good album, quality breaks and beats

also checked Dj Format and Handsome Boy Modelling School, both awesome!

Aesop rock, uh rocks, his songs are great. On a more aggressive note check out 'one six' by 7l and esoteric. And some chilled canadian hip hop by 'specifics'. Um, also try listening to some stuff by murs, especially a song called animals featuring Phonte.

For some excellent hip hop instrumentals search for 'respect your elders' by memo, and 'katherine' by Panik. All their tunes are amazing.

2tyred – They're great live too. He's only 21 and he's finding the whole experience pretty surreal. As you would. I went to see him live and we were sat backstage afterwards chatting to Kurtis Blow and Melle Mel. Mad.

Their tour dates are on the Myspace page too. Well worth checking out
