    Yes! I have an old deore mech on road campy stis! they're fine
    all front mechs work the same, i believe
    (beware of size and top/bottom pull)

    For shimano, yes but
    mixing with campag works but isn't perfect.

    The spring rates are different – road shifters have greater pull (leverage from long lever) – makes it hard to get mtb shifters to work with road mechs. Not sure about the other way round.

    Not a good example, as Campy front shifters aren't indexed, so you don't have the same issue. You're wrong, all front mechs don't work the same – Shimano road ones have a different cable pull to Shimano MTB ones. It very certainly won't work out of the box – though it is possible to bodge.
