i am looking at getting an EPSON EH-TW5300 Long Throw Full HD Home Cinema Projector to project on a white wall in my kitchen diner to watch movies etc. I would sit it on the island, anyone got one and what are your thoughts ?
I don't have one of those, but I have a <dammit, can't remember> somethingorother "LV" (Large Venue) and it needs to be quite a long way from the wall to produce a decent sized picture.
So check the spec carefully to make sure it'll do what you want in terms of distance/picture size.
white wall
You don't really want white for best results. Check the throw carefully. Will you sit on dining chairs to watch the films or do you have other seating? What about external light leaks?
We have an old short throw Sony LCD and a Beamax 208 cm screen. Low resolution, but when fed a good HD signal, source is more important than pixels. Sitting about eight feet away gives a cinema-like solid angle viewing.
ProjectorCentral have a Calculator that will tell you the exact screen size/distance/throw you'll get from all projectors so have a look.
IME PJs are the least reliable bit of HC kit so try and get something with a long guarantee. I see Richer Sounds do the EPSON EH-TW5300 for £469 with a 6yr warranty
Personally I'd rather get a screen than use a wall. A drop down electric screen with a white casing wouldn't be too obtrusive and they're cheap on eBay.
TBH you also benefit from the room being blacked out and all the walls being really dark so that may not be possible in a kitchen diner?
With the falling cost of big screen TVs that might be the better option in this instance.
Low resolution, but when fed a good HD signal, source is more important than pixels.
How does that work?
I think that probably doesn't hold as true as it once did.You don't really want white for best results.
Projector's black levels and contrast have improved massively.
White will be fine. The vast majority of dedicated screens are white.
I'm sure any av-specific/home-cinema-specific projector would be fine, but personally I would recommend getting a s/h JVC HD1 or HD350 or the Sony HW10/HW15 and a new bulb. These are sealed from dust and even our cat-riddled house have remained perfect since day one (which must be 9 years now).
Picture still amazes me today and without blacking out the room with zero light and also dark surfaces, you can't really beat them.
Edit: In general LCD and LCOS projectors are more flexible in placement than DLP.
This on gumtree is good value (or stolen):

Don't have to use 3D - or buy the glasses - it's still a phenomenal projector.
Low resolution, but when fed a good HD signal, source is more important than pixels. How does that work?
Because there is so much more to picture quality than resolution. I think resolution is about 6th or 7th on the top ten list of most important parameters for picture quality. Resolution helps you maintain picture quality - or rather clarity, the closer you are to the screen - which is important because you want to sit close to a larger screen to fill your field of view as much as possible, but if sat far enough away it is largely irrelevant.
The variation in picture quality from supposed HD sources I get on my HD Plasma is huge. It ranges from pretty crap to a stuning super sharp picture with a 3D quality. Same screen, same resolution, different source. Not all HD is the same quality.
