Batteries are lasting better than first thought, theres even a market in second hand and repurposed ones that are outlasting the cars.

Prices come down with scale and thats part of the issue manufacturers have that and not knowing how to say to customers that elec is better than something they make a lot of money from. Tesla makes the best cars because they don't have to fit their cars into a petrol line up.

Having said that take a look at the latest Ren Zoe, Hyundai Ioniq, Bmw i3 or the dozens of new hybrids from VW, BMW

All very capable cars and no longer that new these are second, third or even fourth gen.

guess now is the time to train up as an electrical specialist for cars ... cant see jimmys back street garage fixing your hybrid.

hybrid sounds great when its new - i can just imagine the cost of repairing one when a solder joint goes dry in the charging circuit.

ive seen the mess local garage mechanics who like changing wheel bearings and tires make of electrical repairs.

and FWIW im not against electric vehicles ESP for city use. I built an electric xtracycle for my city travel as more often than not it was just me and a few bags going in and out of town BUT i did not want to arrive sweaty and in cycling clothes.

Why have you brought Tesla into a thread where RDs budget is £13k max? And he wants to fit bikes in it too.

You've clearly got wild imaginations.

absolutely bikebouy...

a 13 grand electric car ( yes you get them for like 2-3 grand used on autotrader how ever the battery rental charge per month has to be paid on top of that)

Thanks Emma,
Interesting vehicle tax changes worthy of a thread itself.

bikeboy et al..you'll need to read how it developed especially the bit when I said its no longer relevant to this thread.

Continuing the electric theme.

I recently bought a Nissan Leaf electric car.
Bit of a squeeze to get a bike in the back, but it will fit with front wheel off.

Look at a one year old used model. I bought a top of the range Tecna with all the toys for £12,500.
4,000 miles from new, full warranty etc. Just like a new car.

Excellent, wouldn't go back to a petrol or diesel car.
Had a charge point installed at home, there is a Nissan and government grant for this , cost £95 to have the 7kw charger.

No road tax, quiet, drives extremely well, best car I have had ever.

Won't suit everyone due to the range issues, but would suit a large majority of drivers who don't drive more than say 60 miles each day.

Get a veg oil burning 4x4 and out green the electric brigade. No problems with getting the bikes in the back, great driving position, and using recycled veg oil. Don't forget that they are an absolute joy to drive.

yes but then your stuck driving something from 1998 mostly.... what modern engines can run on veg oil ?

my 200tdi does sterling job on 80 veg /20 diesel in the summer but in winter in scotland it needs 100% derv as on the cold days the veg oil starts to gel at relitively normal temps.

No need to be scared CZ they even do them for the insecure types.

*sigh*, it's really embarrassing having to explain that I'm not insecure, that was a 'pissing myself laughing' emoji!
🙄
Like that one is a 'rolling my eyes' emoji
Until Tesla introduce the Tesla 3, reputed to retail at around £30k, most electric cars are useless to anyone who plans on driving more than 60 miles on one round trip, or maybe 100, 50 each way. If I go out on a Sunday, yes, there are journeys where I could just about do it on one charge, but with many of the places I go being 50/60/70 miles away, with zero charging facilities, then it's a non-starter, pun intended.
When I used to go biking at various trail centres, it would involve a round trip of at least 140 miles, with bugger-all facilities for charging.
And yes, there are hybrid petrol/diesel-electric cars, but few offer reasonable bike carrying space, and they're expensive.
Plus there's the environmental costs involved in mining the lithium for making the batteries that you're so obsessed with, which I don't suppose you care over much about, because that happens in a foreign country far away.

Indeed. I could use it to commute (but I take the train) and get into the Peak District and back, but I would need something else to go further afield, like the Yorkshire Dales or Lakes. Hybrids only appear to have advantages for urban travel, electric only are short range, so two cars required. Many of us can't afford new technology anyway.

I find the thought of a Renault Twizzy for round town use surprisingly attractive.

First rule of STW recommendations- never take the actual request into account.
Second rule of STW recommendations- tell the OP to get something that you want.

tbf, the op stated a 13k budget, and two caddys were put up, at 13k, with the minor inconvenience of +VAT...

Pre heat it. And yes, earlier engines (mine's a 2005 R20, so not that old), but the point being that a veg burner that is looked after is likely to be better for the environment than a battery powered car (that leccy has to come from somewhere and cars ain't built like what they was). 😉
And yes, there are hybrid petrol/diesel-electric cars, but few offer reasonable bike carrying space, and they're expensive.

Economy takes a huge hit if charging from the motor which defeats the object somewhat.

Bad idea. Out-greening the Electric Brigade could send an impactful virtue-signal across the Free World. Worse still, it would risk reinvigorating the latterly retreating Politically Correct Brigade including the Tree-Hugging Brigade.

Once you've triggered all these cuckolded ninnies back into action you can guarantee that before long we'll all be forced (at gunpoint by some government cuck of the roost) to purchase a GAV* (Government Approved Vehicle)

Compliant GAVs must feature all of the following:

- Run on approved kalettes, lentils or BP (Body Positive) vegetable oil.
- Resemble a disability vehicle (or any other shape deemed non-threatening to women and/or leftists)
- 'Powered By Fairy Dust' label in rear window
- Any (non-toxic*) colour other than pink (see exemptions)**
- Maximum speed limited to 30mph on all carriageways except those shared with bicycles where the limit is reduced to 0.1 mph.
- Minimum MPG limited to 3000mpg

*Early Learning poster-paint colour charts available at all GAV outlets or see colourmesenseless.gov.uk. Paint brushes are available via approved loan scheme.

** Pink livery is reserved for the following designated driver categories: LGBGT, Disabled, Asexual, CIS hetero Male.
IMPORTANT: Hetero females are explicitly prohibited from both owning or driving a pink vehicle as it gives off the wrong message about women. (See exemptions below)

OAP hetero women with an approved disability may (under special circumstances) choose a dusky-pink colour. The final decision in all cases rests with the owner's LAFTT (Local Authority Feminist Think-Tank).

Please note that LAFFT is an extra-judicial (out of court) body and subject to periodical changes in both attitude and policy. Owners who choose pink under these special circumstances also agree that they may in future be forced to subject fheir pink to regular scrutiny. This may result in it being rubbed off by the presiding body. The process will repeat until a satisfactory conclusion is achieved.

Think I'm joking? Buying green is giving the green light to these greentards. PC Brigade are cutting off not only their own manhood but yours too.

Buy big. Buy manly. Buy fast. That is all.

im actually tempted to go test drive a 1.2Turbo berlingo - it has a 110 bhp and says it has torques..... and the economy figures dont look bad....30 quid tax and insurance is buttons How ever they dont do it with an autobox or a 6speed which is a shame

my last shot of a 1.2 TCE dacia logan mcv was horrendous at NSL on noise and fuel - compared to the back to back test with a diesel 1.5DCI Logan.

My issue is that they seem to have great round town economy. I rarely use my car round town - its mostly used for the 60 odd mile each way trip to parents or going weekends away/racing so round town economy isnt important to me in the slightest no good getting 45 round town if i only get 32 on the motorway.

@Jambalya - I sold it as I really didn't like it as a car. Back in a 3 litre petrol estate 🙂

I can't really remember why it didn't fit like that, but from memory, my seatpost was not a dropper and I don't use a quick release which meant there wasn't enough height at the back for it to be upright so it needed to go in backwards. The height and width of the front end, plus length of the bike, made it impossible as when the handlebars were turned, it was then too long

to be fair gingerone

my neighbour has a yeti.

I dont think my large 29ers would go in fully built with the saddle in riding position (rigid forks and bolted seat post) given the high boot floor and lack of length between the rear of the front passenger seats and the rear hatch.

Its not a big car at all. Bit like my mates toyota rav 4 being an inverse tardis big on the outside tiny on the inside.

Indeed. I never really persevered either, as the faff of taking out the parcel shelf and then three individual seats, lugging them all to the house and then finding the floor space (no garage) to put them without damaging them or the house, was way in excess of taking out the parcel shelf and flipping one seat and removing the front wheel and wedging the bike in.

I find it far easier in the 3 series to just fold the rear seats down and slide the bike in under the parcel shelf with the front wheel replaced 🙂

Third rule of STW- Omit the context the from previous posts that dont align with a point you're itching to make.
