Slightly bored this morning and thinking of starting a new business.
Have £10k to put into something.
Must be legal and not involve knives, guns or fish.
If there’s a good enough idea I’ll offer up a prize..

Funnily enough, thats about the amount Ive been told is needed to get 100 frame and forks made and shipped to you. All you need then is a guerilla brand marketing campaign and an account with Hermes 🙂

If someone had a good enough idea for a business then I think they would be finding ways to invest in it themselves.

If I had the inclination, Id scour alibaba for interesting electronics or aluminium CNC products that are not already all over ebay and set up an ebay shop.

Or… Id create a vacuum plastic mould for Defender door cards and have loads mass produced and sell on ebay for far less than the £80 each the OEM ones cost.

Or… develop 3-d printed designs for Landrover panels (esp doors!)

Do what you would ideally do if you had enough cash not to need to get paid for it. What’s yr passion? What do you do so well that you can be extraordinarily competent at it without feeling like you wished it was clocking off time all the time?

    Is a good starting point.

That was the best suggestion, I claim my 10k 8)

    Do you have green fingers?

A friend who was made redundant two years ago, has done very well from gardening, hedge cutting and chimney sweeping, he started from scratch with £9k and now has 4 day a week booked on regular ongoing work.

My friend has a gift shop. Last week, I called in and she was making little felt discs out of Herdwick sheep’s wool which she sews together and embroiders snowmens’ faces on and sells as Christmas tree decorations.

It’s quite labour intensive, but she sells the for £4 each, and they’re flying out.

I commented that the felt discs look like what you might find in the plug-hole of an old-folks’ home shower.

So, you need to go round old folks’ homes and set up contracts to take away all the little felty pads of coarse, grey pubic hair that accumulate in the plug holes of all their baths and showers, make them into little snowmen, and bingo! You’ll be rich beyond your wildest dreams.

    Can I have a prize?

    Re-launch a modern version of the Hite-Rite .

All it needs is a better seat clamp design and a range of collars to fit different posts.
Cheap, light and easy to use for those occasional drops.
    Winner 🙂

    No,it’s ok,you don’t have to thank me.
When you are rich and famous my begging letters will track you down.

I quite like the idea of investing the cash in some noisy garden enquipment then charging gullible home owners to make a lot of noise in their gardens while moving stuff like leaves around. Our neighbour has one every week and he’s very irritating and knows naff all about gardening. Probably also signing on as well.

A guy I know makes a living selling lightsabers on Amazon. Don’t really know too many of the details.

You could set up a gourmet street food business for that.

Wooden dilldos. Saw in on a Paul Murton when he toured Germany. There was a family who made and sold them. You just need a lathe, some hardwood and a selection of finshes.

Make a genuinely good light for road bikes, which in my book means: beam pattern from a Philips Saferide but a bit brighter, a proper battery, and a remote controlled “full-beam” mode.

There’s a definite gap in the market, although the new light from Specialised may have filled it somewhat.

Buying / selling is the most likely possibility.. I pretty much do that now but run someone else’s business. also mrs cloudnine has website, eBay shop and Amazon. It’s finding the right thing and being at the forefront of a new trend which is the hard bit.

You don’t need to be at the forefront of the latest trend, it’s a great way to lose your money though.

Have a look on Ebay, Amazon etc, you will find products that sell at a decent volume and have a good margin to work with.

I contract work 3 days a week as my proper job, and am involved in a small mail order set up which sells predominantly via Ebay, Amazon & our own website. We started with £150 between us 3 years ago & are set this year to break the £100k turnover barrier, with a gross margin of 175-225%. We have a couple of staff now who are on zero hours contracts to do all of our picking and packing to free up our time to help us take the next steps.

There will come a point in the not too distant future where I go full time into this, but it’s a bit like cutting the apron strings, I’ve only ever worked for someone before, so the whole experience has been a massive learning curve, and no doubt will continue to be so.

It’s fun, but also quite stressful, as it grows more & we need to employ people on a more perminant basis the feeling of responsibility gets worse.
