I enjoyed the Irishman, but I watched it in 3 sittings almost like a mini series. I think I'd have struggled in a one-er. The characters were interesting and a bit mysterious which I liked. The bit where he's giving the guy a kicking is funny - it looks like something out of Still Game. High quality content for not a lot of money.

and as a film it’s in need of a robust editor

To be fair - it's got one of the best editors in the business.

Irishman was an experiment for me - Scorsese for Netflix - with free reign. It didn't work for me and I went to see it at the cinema!

Yep, enjoying Otis, Maive and co in sex education. Gillian Anderson ...she gets better with age!

Was s/he having an off day? The entire last 20 minutes could go with zero loss to the film, and throughout there's a lot of bagginess. I'm glad I saw it, but Goodfellas/ Casino are much better films

I actually enjoyed the latter part of the film better to be honest. It moved in a different direction.

Agree it could be tightened up. But that's what happens when a Director is given full control.

I’m trying to watch Messiah, but just can’t get in to it. Not sure if it is how it’s shot or the script. Just very boring and I keep falling asleep. Also has the lady from Man in the High Castle. She’s up their with Keanu Reeves in the looking very confused stakes.

+1 for Sex Education.

Now I’ve got used to the style and weird visual cues to the US and the 1980’s, it’s all good. Love the cars in particular. Some awesome location shots. Wye Valley has never looked so good.

Story is gripping, tragic and funny.

Acting superb.

Stephen Fry cameo too!

Can’t wait for S3.

If you are not sure it’s for you, give it a go. I doubt you’ll be disappointed. Unless you’re a bit prudish. S2 has been preety graphic.

Watched the first ep of The Stranger last night, I'll be watching the rest of it. Hopefully Shaun Dooley's character will develop into something similar to the one he played in Misfits.

We watched "The Phantom Thread" which seems unpromising at first but builds up to a brilliant finale.

That was an excellent film. Virtually no thematic appeal but completely winds you in.

Love the stuff at Robin Hood's bay.

Is that on the 'flix?

another +1 for Sex Education

Good so far, not what I expected 😊
Bit odd that a US High School has been transposed to the UK but I’m sticking with it...

Watched uncut gems tonight. Can't stand Adam Sandler normally.

It was excellent. Very good watch.

I lasted 30 minutes of that looked like it had potential but Sandler’s horrendous acting ruined it so I switched it off.

I lasted 30 minutes

You missed out then.

I thought Sandler was pretty good in it, a massive leap away from his earlier roles, and nice to see him in something more serious.

Enjoyed the film and would say it’s worth 135mins of anyone’s time.

The story seems like it would Ok but Sandler was Sandler, not even as good as his early stuff where he was bearable just well rubbish.

I think I just liked him acting in an actual role, rather than being a goof. He is very Marmite though.

Yeah I wanted to give him the benefit of doubt and thought this may put him some way to being Ok playing a serious part. I just found too much of that goof coming through and the bad acting wasn’t enough. Shame as I say the story did show it could be ok.

Still we can’t all like the same thing.

His acting wasn't the problem, the whole plot was utter nonsense. Apart from the fish.

+1 for The Stranger.

Episode 1 was good, 2 was even better. Lots filmed around here (Bury town centre! Bolton Grammar School!)

I'm hooked

Uncut Gems was a full on riot. Loved how it just kept going from one untidy episode to another.

I was completely gripped to see how things would pan out.

Sandler (who I don't normally mind) does one of those really painful anti-hero performances where some people will hate him but I was totally sucked in.

Great cinematography and score. And the editor does a fab job of keeping this particular style focussed by the end.

Would like to have seen this at the flix.

What with Marriage Story, Roma, Irishman and this under their belt Netflix are starting to do a decent job with a really interesting blend of slightly risky commercial cinema.

Only 2 episodes into sex education so far and enjoying it. Still can’t fathom when it’s meant to be set, there are 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s themes.... Maybe that’s the idea so it’s timeless?
When was it actually filmed (yes could just google it) ? I can remember seeing ‘that’ vid of Anderson a fair while back

Yup I’m sure I read that was the idea whatever the reason it works very well.

Oh and Wye Valley, some on here gave a lot more detail though when S1 was on.

Oops!

I’ve put the Uncut Gems back on giving it another 30 minutes, struggling Sandler really is terrible.

“I’m shouting”

”I’m whispering now”

Smiles at a kid.

Basically the same as all his later films.

Don't **** with cats....

But there was another pair of hands in the cat video.

They pronounced fusilier as "fuzy-liaer".

The mum was brilliant in her naivety /unwillingness to see the facts.

Is the Stranger just another grim Brit thing? Or is there more going off?

Only watched one episode, but no, certainly not grim. It’s Harlan Coben created, and based on one of his novels, so possibly think along the lines of Safe, which I think was on Netflix a while back - I wasn’t keen to be honest. So plenty of wealthy middle class people living in nice leafy streets with kids in grammar school uncovering dark secrets of those close to them. And, would you believe it, a pair of mis-matched detectives that bounce hilariously off one another. Cast looks a bit better than Safe, but crikey, episode 1 had more cliches than a cliche shop on Cliche St. I’ll give it a bit more leeway based on what people here are saying.

Couple of episodes into the Stranger and it's a bit like Grange Hill and Hollyoaks mixed with some elements of Happy Valley.(That is a damn fine programme.)

Entertaining enough I guess.

Some odd casting going on...

Happy Valley sprung to my mind too. Have paused at ep3 partly because I'm annoyed how young Richard Armitage looks, and partly down to being oddly drawn into the ridiculousness that is Ragnarok instead.

Has anyone else recommended "how to sell drugs online..... Fast? "

It's German, a bit teenage angsty, a bit quirky, quite funny, I'm probably way too old to be enjoying it but it's pretty cool. Six 30 minute episodes. I've done 5 in so far, don't know if it's going to tie up or do a second series.

Ditto. I watched all 144 episodes of BTVS on the turbo training, over a couple of years!

Does early 40s count as "younger adult"?

Definitely a devisive one.

I seem to be in the minority with this one. Tip: put subtitles on.
