    Found this in my garden this morning OK its a caterpillar but whats the white stuff under it….

    I think some caterpillars cover themselves in that to make them look like bird poo, so they don’t get eaten by birds.

    That one clearly got carried away.

    It’s a tubeless caterpillar the badger has been using it.

    If the caterpillar has produced that then it is probably a mucus excretion to ward off predators. Also possibly helps keep the beasty moist, though probably not needed this time of year. Could be a pre-pupa stage excretion.
