I’m making the move from Nottingham to Sheffield next week. There is obviously load of good riding around the city but are there are any regular group rides going on or mtb clubs to get involved with? Any advice appreciated.

Sorry, I thought you said ‘North’. Sheffield is not ‘North’. Leeds is almost North but that’s about it. York & above is proper North.

Join Ride Sheffield on fb and twitter. Plenty of clubs and riders will help you out.

There’s a ‘Sheffield mountain bikers’ group on meet up that seem pretty active and have rides on most weeks. Not been on any myself yet (happy to ride on own / currently too unfit to keep up) but there seems to be a fairly diverse bunch looking at the member profiles

I’m a born and bred southerner who regards my time living in Loughborough as my ‘Northern Chapter’ and that is sadly true.

The reason for the squiggle is that it’s easier to be northern (as denoted by a funny accent) if you live west, so Birmingham is more northern than Peterborough, for example. For the record, the correct dividing line is from the Wash to just above Gloucester. Anything above the Manchester-Leeds motorway zone is ‘Proper North’ and at some point between there and the borders you are into ‘Here be Dragons’ territory.

Norfolk, East Anglia etc are largely their own little bit, like Wales.

My wife comes from Nuneaton and when she moved oop north ( Barnsley) 8 years ago she couldn’t understand a word some people said. Sheffield is definitely south…they have tv, broadband and coffee shops.

I know it’s not really the done thing, but to answer the OP’s question – I don’t know of any specific groups but as in sure you know Sheffield has a reputation for being very ‘outdoorsy’ with a big social side relating to that. Don’t think you’ll struggle to find new buddies to ride/climb/run with.
