    Who’s seen it? Was quite a surprise…

Just Wow ! We were looking for Prince Andrew (the actual one) last time there – but to no avail. I promised my Dad I would greet him appropriately if we met ….

Ahhh gutted for a minute there I thought I was going to be on the same video as King Charles as McTrailRider went past me at Cairn Gorm the other week.

Yep, saw it earlier. Happy to see that Charlie was a pleasant character but shocked to see Andrew call him Sir 🙂 Shirley it is “Your Royal Highness!”, or else it is off to the Tower!

    Obsequious much?

Or more charitably… just a bit star struck perhaps?

Thought that was quite cool, particularly that Charles was just out walking on his own in the rain and midge for the love of it

Really? Not just taken aback, maybe not exactly sure how to behave and erring on the side of deference?

Should he have just whapped his balls in Charlie’s mouth and made him hum A Man’s a Man for a’ That?

    Give the guy a break.

Star struck, bloody hell it’s the king, hard not to be polite with an old man and one who’s so good at small talk. He’s made some quips about the queen before if you find his previous Lochnagar and Balmoral videos.

Thats Ace. Not particularly a royalist but I happen to think Charlie is a top fella.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to call him if I had suddenly stumbled across the King on the trail, Give them a break ffs.

It was a pleasant interaction handled well.

Ok. I lazily replied to Scotroutes post rather than properly expressing myself…

I was struck by how impressed and awed McT was by the meeting. He said after that he’s not much of a royalist ay all but clearly left with a big impression.
Charles was indeed quite ( very?) polite and affable, and was indeed walking down the track just like a human being. The whole interaction seemed very nice and positive.

What amazes me is how as a nation we see that as somehow amazing, rather than a reasonable expectation. Charles is raised up in our collective estimations just by acting like a normal human being should.

And McT ( and indeed me when I met him an Di,) come away feeling blessed and favoured by mere contact with them.

It shows how deeply ingrained the RF are into our psyche, even people who aren’t in favour of the institution.

+ 1 for not a Monarchist but even I have to admit Charles came across really well there, just an amiable old boy out for a stroll in his happy place, no hint of awkwardness.

Much as I dislike the concept, the institution and some of the family (Andrew!!!) I find it hard to summon up much antipathy for Charles himself and this video has reinforced that impression.

It’s the ‘bloke on a walk’ angle. The full entourage / pomp think I’d be utterly indifferent to but meeting anyone famous out of context is completely different. I’d still puddle-bomb Boris Johnson and shout ‘****’ though.

I’ve gotta say meeting ANYBODY nice while out biking or walking can often be quite amazing considering the attitude of about 75% of the nation over the last few years. Lately I’m impressed by people doing something for others and not just themselves, I’ve come to expect them to not pee on me if I’m on fire considering the attitudes of most people when it came to mask wearing to protect/consider other people.

Hey, ask anyone who has ridden/walked/run with me in the hills and they’ll confirm that I’m Chatty McChatface when meeting strangers. I don’t call any of them sir though.

Weirdly I experience the complete opposite. Out in the hills the vast majority of people are friendly, chatty and helpful. Its the unpleasant ones who stand out.

Never met a King though to be fair

Obsequious means servile to an excessive degree. I think you may be being melodramatic if you think a person calling Charlie “sir” meets that definition.

It’s all very nice saying Charlie’s a nice old boy and indeed he is to meet.

But he still retains veto over laws made in the UK and the police aren’t allowed to enter grounds he owns without his permission.   (Aside from the fact that no inheritance tax is paid by them, ever, and they extract wealth from “public” property (like 25% of the proceeds of sale of land for offshore windfarms goes into “his pocket”).

Just think about that for a bit.  I’d be nicer if life was cushy and I retained multiple legally-protected advantages above everyone in the UK.

I’ve always found Charlie to be a civilsed and straightforward individual when meeting him in the hills. One example I can relate is on a November, lightly snowy day up near Bachnagairn, while riding the classic Capel Mounth circuit with a buddy. Charlie was coming south as we were heading north, shortly before we reached the horse shelter at the top. He was dressed for winter stalking, with a stalker alongside and unusually, plus one squaddie in civvies.

Chatty, friendly and asking sensible questions about hydraulic brakes. Important for me though, was realising that while he had company on what was going to be a properly long hike, he was carrying both his own kit bag and rifle, clearly a choice.

I’ve not seen McT’s video yet but suspect he has had a similar, respectful encounter in both directions. Happy days.

y’know, I’m fine. My life’s pretty cool, and TBH if thinking about this extraneous stuff that I’ve no control over makes me as bitter and stagnant as it clearly does you, I’ll pass thanks

Whilst I agree that this is a ridiculous and unjustifiable constitutional throwback, Liz and Charlie seemed to have long since realized that should they ever actually try and exercise this power they’d be out on their arse fairly quickly.

This obviously doesn’t preclude one of their more dimwitted offspring stepping on that particular landmine down the road but I struggle to think of many things that would make us a republic faster than the monarch deciding to actually use their veto, or even threaten to.

Our system of government is basically a massive bodge that just about works and like all bodges that just about work, nobody really wants to mess with it in case it stops working altogether.

Seemed like a perfectly reasonable interaction. It’s hard not to be happy for an old bloke out enjoying a wander, far from the utter, utter **** of the people he must have to deal with on a daily basis.

I say this as someone who detests the monarchy and the British upper crust as a group.

Trouble is, on an individual basis on a superficial level, they tend to be nice enough in my experience.

I cheered on the egg flingers when Charlie was on official duty, but if McTrail did it out on the hill it would be a touch odd.

As above though, Boris and his grasping ilk are a different story.  He’s fair game anywhere.  Barefoot charity walk for poor orphans? Here, have a walking pole to the face ya prick.

“Sir” is OK, it’s a show of respect that just makes the interaction go more pleasantly.

“Your Majesty” would probably be pushing it though.

At least he didn’t tell them to get orf his land.

And moaning about the midgies appears to be a universal constant regardless of rank.

They don’t actually tell the public when they use their veto on laws. They get to pre approve and modify the bits that they don’t like before we get to see them.

I was just scrolling through some of the You Tube comments when I noticed a certain JiveHoneyJive posting his typical conspiracy theory bollocks so it’s not just STW that he infects…

Going out in the hills is about escapism from others things in life.

I think calling him Sir was absolutely fine and very respectful. They were on his land, they were staying in his house, he was a gentle older man they met walking out in the hills

In many friendly parts of the country people refer to others as Sir or Madam, especially to older folk as it shows respect.

People call my wife ‘Miss funkydunc’ even in a social setting as they respect her role and position. She actually would prefer it if they didn’t.

I agree with the above if had been on official duty then they could have questioned his politics etc, but still doesn’t mean you can’t show respect for someone

Looks like the video has been pulled. I wonder if he informed Charlie he was being filmed for a youtube channel?
