That should boost McTrailrider’s views and subscribers. I hope it boosts his YT income

They could have linked to the full video

Lol, the Telegraph version is edited somewhat more favorably!

Ha, "I'm annoyed because I didn't want to care, but that was quite cool"

I got the impression from that video that the rather nice old bloke they met also disliked the monarchy and was quite happy to be out for a nice quiet walk.

My mother has met Charlie a few times through work events, National Trust/English Heritage and so on, and once the cameras are off and the lackeys bugger off he's a fairly pleasant young man (according to my mum).

She's also massively anti monarchy to the degree of losing a few friends during the whole funeral/coronation fuss. Just because she really couldn't be bothered with it all. She's nearly 80 now, so doesn't much care.

I don’t call any of them sir though.

I get called sir on the rugby pitch and by the security guards at work. I don't think they are being obsequious.
Obvious they're not as cool as you though.

I believe that Charles and most of the Royal family are probably decent human beings. That video plus other stuff I've seen suggests I'm right about Charles at least.

The other stuff, veto on laws etc..., I don't imagine that the current Royals ever asked for that. I suspect that all thier 'hangers-on' or the rest of the 'Royal Household' if you will just put those things in place because they thought the Royal family should have that level of provilidge.

I blame them and us for that mess - not the actual Royal family.

In uniform that was the only way to address members of the public. To not do so would incur the wrath of a grumpy individual with a pace-stick.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to call him if I had suddenly stumbled across the King on the trail

Protocol says that the first reply uses 'your majesty', then 'sir' for all subsequent ones if we're being polite.

I don't reckon any of those grumpy individuals with pace sticks are really that grumpy.  It's all an act.  I used to imagine them crocheting or flower arranging when they were purple faced, screaming at me and threatening to violate me with said pace stick. I'd never say that to one though! **** that for a game of soldiers!  I got given a pace stick once as a (techy) warrant. Not a clue how to use it. It gathered dust in the corner of my office until I palmed it off on some wannabe drill pig.

The current royals may not have asked for the extensive power and privilege they enjoy, but they very much could make the choice to give it up. This would make them ‘decent human beings.’

And in terms of those powers not being used, the Queen’s (at the time) representative in Australia, the Governor General, dismissed a democratically elected prime minister within the lifetime of many forum users. The queen herself was at arms length from the decision but I’m sure it’s a complete coincidence that the prime minister in question instigated free higher education, universal healthcare and land rights for First Nations people. Oh, and started the process to remove god save the queen as the national anthem.

And common sense might be something like, 'I'm really sorry but this is an unusual encounter for me. What should I call you?', if indeed there was any need to call him anything. I had a similar encounter and then a conversation with rock god Brian May once, and didn't need to call him Brian, Mr May or sir. I suppose I could have inserted a 'sir' if I'd been feeling especially crawly. 😀

Yeah, and that's going really well for Harry and Meghan 😉

I’ve just watched the video after it turned up on Flipboard, and really enjoyed their meeting with Charles, it sort of confirms what he’s like in a non-official capacity, having seen a few bits of footage. Also Ann is like her dad, my brother’s first wife used to work with horses at Gatcombe, and Anne would help with mucking out and other stable yard work, and apparently rolled her sleeves up to clear out a blocked yard drain while some posh people were being shown around, just to see their reactions.

Anyhoo, apart from that, that was an awesome bit of riding, fabulous countryside, and that walkers path would challenge my walking ability, riding it gets a solid ‘NOPE’ from me, especially at those sort of speeds. 😳

Just watching it put my heart-rate up!

👌🏻🎯💯

Do you think there was a sniper for each of them or just one between three?

Must admit I wondered if they really were alone with him, especially as they'd been passed earlier down the track by a number of big black range rovers. Some poor buggers might have had to dive out of a nice warm car into a midge fest to keep tabs on them.

It prompted an interesting discussion in our house. Son, "well I'd just say hello and keep riding". Mrs anagallis would stop to chat...me I am really torn. I think I would stop and say hello, but it would be my only chance ever to tell a member of royalty that I think the concept is morally wrong and I know I'd regret it for the rest of my life if I didn't try to politely put this across. (Note, I would not be recording, that would make a difference). Is the reality that I'd bumble something vaguely polite, not bow and curtsey and then pedal off full of regret.

The video’s still there for me. I don’t see how it’s anything but a positive for the king

I wonder if there will be more royal fanboys around the estate hoping to get their own personal interaction for YouTube - some here would probably love to have recorded some smart words about monarchy being nonsense and ridiculous privilege.  Whilst the media image people in the royal household will be loving it, I suspect the security staff are less enthused.

and hope Andrew gains a few extra beer tokens off the back of it. He make’s good content.

that took me a minute to realise the that man behind the camera is Andrew.  In this context I thought you were referring to Charlie’s wee bro…

I don’t have a YouTube channel, and whilst I am firmly not a monarchist, don’t know what I would actually have called him or said to him, but I’m not sure I’d have posted it online!  Does that make me obsidious?  Perhaps, but whilst it was maybe nice to see he was a normal human it wasn’t really that interesting an interaction - cyclists make pleasant small talk to local land owner isn’t actually good content - it just happened to be because of who that landowner was.   It would be nice to be able to go a walk in the hills without your conversations being videod and put online whoever you are.

A lady called me "sir" on the train yesterday when she asked if she could take the seat next to me. It felt odd to be addressed like that by a stranger.

My lad had picked up on the video somewhere, was impressed by all involved and he's not a royalist

Like you I'd probably do the same as I do to anyone else I ride past in a remote area - hello, and carry on riding. But if I spotted that it was Charles, my brain would go through mental somersaults about whether to give a comedy salute along with the greeting, or maybe a Nazi salute might be more in keeping but that's pretty much frowned on by any sensible person these days, so keep it simple with a 'Howdy Big Man'.

At this point I would have fallen off, and been forced into a longer conversation with our revered regent.

Funny looking at the view count. McTrailrider normally gets something like 5-15K views on his videos, this ones already over half a million 😃

I use sir or madam sometimes when addressing strangers. If they are fellow bikers probably not. Thing is, I am not sure about addressing females as mate. My dad used ducks, but that was very much of its time and place ('60s and '70s South London).

For his sort of videos, maybe £2.50/£3.00 per thousand views, so maybe £1500, but it would depend on click throughs, ads and so on.

it’s now just shy of a million views, but presumably has consequential benefits too - pick up more subscribers, pick up a load of likes, comments etc, so the algorithm is more likely to promote his other content and thus get more clicks.  If you make a video a week, long term, those benefits could be as important as the original video.

I thought the protocol was to refer to an elderberry odour and hamsters.  (Or is he back now)
