you know the one. Can it be done?

If the video recording device has a zoom feature – yes.

Without manual control over the speed of the zoom it’ll be tricky, plus there’ll be pixellation as you zoom in.

No idea mate, but I’d like to nominate this as question of the week.

Not really. You simply have to match your movements to the set speed. I could demonstrate if you really want, though not with an iPhone (and I understand it’d have to be a 7 onward for vid zoom and I don’t know if it’s notched).

D’ya want me to make my aluminium moka pot look as if it’s just seen a dishwasher approaching or something.

    You’re going to need a bigger phone…

    😆

I don’t see you could without a physical, rather than digital zoom. You need to refract light.

Which will be tricky if the set speed is quicker than you can move 🙄

Yes, please do. But with an iphone as the op requested.

    rather than digital zoom

Of course, it’s a bloomin’ digital zoom, isn’t it.

Ignore me, didn’t think that through. I can still create the Brody moka pot if you want…

    😉

That’d have to be quite rapid, then. And enough with the ‘tude, dude.

You could fit the phone to a treadmill.

From what I remember of some BBC4 documentary, that shot was done by mounting the camera on a dolly and zooming out while moving the camera towards him. I think. There might have been something about adjusting the aperture size as well which is why the background ‘goes all funny’*

From your nonsensical ramblings, i’ve worked it out. and you can do it.

I am in control of the digital zoom speed. I am in control of my movement. I have an iphone gimble thing so I can keep it steady.

I’ve jus recreated it in the office with my colleague to a rough extent.

Thank you STW. You are gods amongst men(and women)

Prize for best answer goes to suburbanreuben though

    Easy, innit.

Now do one with a moka pot…

Can it be done in post?

Pretty sure Pinnacle Studio (for iPad or iPhone) can do zooms on video.

Maybe you could shoot it normally with you moving closer/further away as required then add the zoom in post?

That wouldn’t work if you want the background movement.

But it’s done, anyway. Obviously the digital zoom makes no difference.

I thought that was basically exactly the same thing as a digital zoom (i.e. cropping and expanding the image rather than an optically zooming).

    *confused*

Yeah, I was just going through that and can’t see the difference, but I have the excuse of a hangover.

I reckon we should see this scene remake for assessment…

OK I’ve just hurt my brain trying to work if that would actually get the full effect. You’re going to have to post you recreation.

Sorry for the lack of focus – it’s a right piece-of-shit camera TBH.

    No but loving the pic!

It’s the bit where the shark grabs the kid on the inflatable raft/bed thing – the scene after the incident when he’s sat in the deck chair and the camera zooms in.

    Dolly Zoom.

Looking at that I can’t see how you can do it properly with a digital-only zoom.

A dolly shot? Not possible with an iPhone.
A big part of the move is the change of perspective as you track in and zoom out, that’s why the shape of his head changes with the move. It’s not the same as punching in to the shot in post.

Why is there a zoom shot of Hank Marvin on a beach anyway? 😐

I’ve been trying to recreate this shot with my iphone all morning.

Digging Roy up was hard enough but now he keeps falling off the chair.

Changing the distance between camera and subject is what makes the background move relative to the subject and creating the effect. The zoom is just to keep the subject the same size even though the camera is moving closer. Doesn’t matter if it’s optical zoom, digital zoom, or just cropping and expanding/shrinking in post production.

I’ve done it with a smooth floor and an office chair. So its possible.

Stunning Results. I apologize unreservedly for my initial skepticism and negative attitude.
