Last year I rode with 6 people, but never with more than one at a time as they don’t know each other.

This year the same is happening, I have tried to get them together on odd occasions but it never seems to pan out. I ride every weekend and always with one of the 6. They tend to ride maybe once a month max which suits me fine and I pretty much always have a riding buddy.

I also climb twice a week but that is always with the same person as there is a large element of trust involved but the same isn’t really applicable to riding.

Sunday morning crew 4 to 8
    Trips away 15 plus

I’ll ride with anywhere between 1 and 6 people, depends on the ride and people’s schedules – my riding fits round family activities so often arranged at short notice with whoever is nearest.

The regular group I used to ride with has fragmented a bit with different people wanting different things – was a good Sunday the other week as 3 did a road ride, 2 of us did a long MTB ride along the towpaths and a few more did the regular loop, then most of us met up back at the pub afterwards.

I often ride alone but will be looking for people to ride with soon as I’ll have more free time knocking around to organise rides etc.

I ride with 1 person mainly who is a great guy and very reliable. There is another who dips in and out as he has the time and a couple of other who are out maybe twice a year!!

Not many, but I’m a fairly anti-social bugger – Big groups feel a bit ‘coach party’ to me and I get frustrated at the excessive and frequent stops.

Probably Buzz’s last STW ride was the biggest, and mostly its two or three others, but not usually all together.

My riding time is me time!

I have never ridden with anyone.

    Very few 🙁

I always seem to buck whatever trend my mates are following, they’re all currently into freeride/downhill while I’m getting more into long distance and bike-packing.

I’ve tried to lure some of them into the mountains with pictures of spectacular remote trails etc etc but the bug doesn’t seem to have caught, which I can’t really understand. Must be my stinking chat!

Edit: Actually I made a lot of new riding buddies last year, so apologies to the TBC crew and Robgarrioch who trekked out to Torridon to save me from the pits of despair! 😀

I’ve about 5 really good mates i ride with regularly. Usually there are only about 4-5 of us in total out, frequently less. There are anything up to about another 8 mates or mates of mates who come out with us occasionally. In total though I don’t think there have ever been more than maybe 8 of us out on a ride.

Edit: used to ride with a club years ago where we’d have anything up to maybe 60-70 odd people out on club rides at times though i’m not really into that scene any more.

Seems like my riding habits are not that odd then!

I agree that riding in a big group can be a pain and all the stopping/starting/mechanicals can make a short ride into q much longer one. I rode a couple of times with the Cheesy Riders and BMBC in bristol and had that problem.

Also has the problem in the past where my ideal ride is a far cry from theirs. I also have a lot more time and an understanding wife so find it a lot easier to get away than a lot of my other mates.

Have 5 or 6 riding buddies, number is increasing a bit at the moment as I’m now on a team!
Tend to ride on my own, although have trips with a bunch of us 🙂

My housemate (joeh2o) has just built up his first proper bike so I have a new riding buddy…off to sherwood next wednesday 😀

One guy I have ridden with for many years and still ride with a good few times a year, a couple of guys I have ridden with on and off for a few years and quite a posse of guys from here /tbc rides and various spinnoffs.

Its nice to just go out with a couple of folk you know well and enjoy the blast, but its also nice to get involved in mass social rides – some of them over the year have been very good indeed.

Just accept that as the numbers increase so does the faff factor and plan accordingly. Meeting up with new folk gets you out and maybe to different trails. Showing folk around is also a buzz.

90% of the time on my own
7% of the time with one particular buddy
3% of the time with one of three other buddies

I learnt to ride in a group but for me now it is more of a solitary pastime, although I do enjoy the ride/beer thing with Mr 7%.

EDIT: and its not because I’m an anti social bugger, just that I can ride from the front door and as a freelancer with children am not forced to plan my rides but can drop and go when I fancy.

Mostly just me. Once or twice a year I’ll get a couple of really old friends out on the bikes they have knocking around and we always have a fantastic time. But perhaps that’s because we only do it once or twice a year. Biking time is strictly me time.

Trail Snail Racing family/team totals 15, but we have never quite all made it out on the same ride at the same time. (of the 15, I suppose 12 of us are parents and three of us are nurses, so imagine the logistics of us all being free at the same time. I think 12 or 13 of us managed the 24/12 last year though)

Probably a handful of other riding mates on top of that, and occasionally I go out on weekly xc pain/cheekyfest with another local club.

Down here its not hard to bump into new riding mates though. I suppose if i still lived in Leicestershire it would be a different story!

One. Whom I’ve ridden with for 20 odd years. Don’t socialise much between rides but wev’e got an ‘understanding’ that every other Saturday is sacred.
    This weekend is Torridon Time!

Not that many. Used to be a member of a club, every Sunday was guaranteed to be a decent ride. Recently the club seems to have aimed itself more towards the roadie/duathalon areas, neither of which I am even slightly interested in.

So now I’m back riding with 2 or 3 people, which is fine. Hate to ride alone, mind you – for me the banter is at least as important as the riding.

used to have 2 riding buddies – one of which i never see, nor get asked to get riding with (which he still does 🙁 ) he got me into biking, but clearly doesnt wish to ride with me anymore, we spend a year most weekends riding everywhere together and often midweek too…then nothing, not sure why but he still gets out and i never get an invite 🙁

my other riding buddy is actually a ‘proper’ mate, got 2 kids comes out midweek with me for a longer night ride week in week out without fail, but not at the weekend, he does road riding then mega early so hes back for the kids etc….

another mate who used to race xc and road, got back into mtb’ing last year, came out with me alot to start off with…then had a baby and sold his 6 month old bike he just pimped up and got back into road riding…hence me now being a loner 🙁

    definite pattern emerging here

i then ride alone every sunday without fail 🙁

tried to meet up a few times with a couple of guys but its never quite happened, usually due to weather…

funny thing is i actually love being out alone, im not complaining at all, i get around quicker, i dont have to wait for punctures etc etc etc and i tend to push myself quicker if alone…i do miss sometimes on a sunny sunday afternoon being with other riders, but it doesnt bother me at all if i had to choose between 0 riders and 4 or 5 riders, i would still go out regardless….

i always see plenty of folk out and about and have good chats with them, often riding around the same bits with them, sometimes thats quite nice in itself…
