Helmets for huge heads

My open face helmet is coming up for replacement and I took a huge hit to the head yesterday at Black Mountains in my fullface. Felt the smash, saw flashing lights and went KO for a little. Then in afternoon kept getting blurry vision from one eye along with more flashing lights and just generally feeling like my IQ had dropped to about 7

Much better today but this has prompted me to get onto replacing that lid, and my fullface of course

I’ll try on a few as I know fit is most important but as I have a huge head does anyone else with a big head have any suggestions on where to start?

Features I’m after are glasses storage, fidlock buckle, MIPS and most importantly high scoring at Virginia Tech. I’ve been looking at TLD A3, Fox Speedframe Pro and Spesh Tactic/Ambush which tick most of those boxes although I haven’t found one that does all 4

Any suggestions appreciated, and any fullface recommendations as well since I now need a new one of those

A mate with a huge head uses a POC helmet as nothing else fits him

As the owner of a large bonce (63 cm), I use Specialized helmets - an Ambush Comp and Propero III. Both in XL, both have MIPS.

Same huge noggin here, only helmets I’ve had any luck with over the years are Specialized, Giro, POC and Bell with Bell being an only just

Also the owner of a 63cm head. Giro, TLD and Kask make helmets that fit my long, narrow skull. I'm an open face helmet user though, no idea what would work for full face. Back in my motor biking days Shoei did the only helmets that fitted me in the 90's.

Big AND wide for me. IXS Trail Evo in the XL wide was a pretty good fit, but have since upgraded to a Bell 4Forty Air MIPS. Depends on the shape of your melon I guess. Tried several XL/XXL models but all were tight around the temples. Bell is the best fitting helmet I've ever owned except for a Bern piss pot, but not very 'Enduro bro' looking.

As an owner of a large swede I found that most of the most popular helmets don’t fit. I have a 7idp open face lid.

62cm and i loooooove the Fox Speedframe Pro. Smashed the top of one into a boulder after an unplanned dismount recently and didn't even feel the impact. Previously used a TLD and it fit very differently - much less comfortable. But that was shape.

Troy Lee.  I have an A3 and a Stage full face, both fit great in largest sizes.

There was a thread about this a few weeks ago, i posted on it as i have a massive and exceedingly lumpy melon. Plenty of suggestions for FF helmets (but not from me).

Also, if you haven't already, get checked out by proper medical people:-

That's a massive smash and you'll probably have a significant concussion, even if you're feeling ok today.

This. The ither posters on this thread dont have huge heads, they have big heads. If you have a truly huge head then you dont worry about features etc, you just buy whatever fits if you ever find it.

The only two helmets I've ever found that fitted without hotgouging the polystyrene are:
Open:
GIRO Fixture Xl

Full:
7idp

I have a 661 XXL fully that just fitted once I'd torn the MIPS out if it.

Actually, i tell a lie. Just remrmbered that i did have to hammer down a section of polystyrene on the 7idp to mske it comfy. Couldnt burn it out as I couldnt get the lining off

I've resorted to carving the polystyrene away on both cycle and motorcycle helmets in the past. I seem to have a very large oval head, so even the biggest round helmets don't fit comfortably.
Currently using a XXL Nolan motocross helmet which fits me well without unauthorised modification. Don't know what model it is, but I see on their website they go up to 3XL.

I'm another long oval 63. For me my Specialized Ambush Comp MIPS (previous generation) is the best I've had in a long time, some Giros and TLDs have (just) fitted in the past. My TLD Stage also just fits but I'd prefer it longer and should maybe work the shell out a bit. When I need a new helmet I just have to try loads and get whatever fits best, forget the features.

Specialized do some big helmets I think. I haven’t evened able to wear a TLD or Fox lid ever.

back in the day of piss pots I used to have to sand the insides down so they fit (not ideal).

I wouldn’t like to thin’ how man6 helmets I have bought and returned to CRC when they used to have free returns. Always optimistic and after a fancy lid but they rarely fit. I really like fidlock buckles so I have cut and stitched them on before

Woah aren’t Henry’s getting expensive!
Yeah I know, what’s your head worth! I do buy top end generally.

I’m a long time fan of Giro Montaro and Fox as they generally fit me well. The Bell Super is ok too but my older one is not breezy enough for Summer.
I have a massive long head. Velociraptor style. The POCs I’ve tried are way too short. Don’t think TLD or Sweet fit me either.

I just bought a Specialized Ambush 2 - it has “improved” MIPS plus a rep for great ventilation. Not as much plastic touching the bonce as the Montaro, so less sweat I hope. Montaro has been great. Maybe Ambush 2 will be better.
Not ridden yet but it has room to spare for my oval melon.
I like the adjustment mechanism too.

Some Ambush 2 offers out there. Sigma had Ambush 2 L in white sage almost half price.
“White Sage” looks good to me although I’m an all black fan deep down.
A light helmet seems essential imo to let others better see you coming through the public woods.
Perhaps it’ll be cooler than black in the sun too. (Yeah, I know, nothing’s ”cooler” than black)

The earlier Specialized Dissident carbon full face fitted me too. It was light and well vented. New model looks good.
Essential to try on really.

I had a flirtation with convertible hats. But I’ve gone off the idea - why compromise either, just get 2.
For sure they have a place - If I was doing a multi day trans type race I’d maybe reassess.
Too late for that at my age.

I ended up returning the Leatt Enduro convertible titfer because the separation / attachment mechanism fell to bits after 2 assemblies. Kinda had fittings like rawlpugs direct into the “polystyrene“ they simply pulled out. No comment from the distributor. WTF fitted well but seemed unsafe.

Kali get good write ups.

Maybe have a look at helmet reviews on Blistergear - they don’t take advertising and claim total non bias.

Giro, 661 and Bell (because they all come out of the same company) in the biggest size fit me. They do two shapes though, one of the "Large" shapes is comedically small on me. No idea about fidlock buckles of 3rd party testing, I'm happy enough if I can just get it on my head at all. Both my Giro and Bell lids have MIPS though.

I've no idea what shape my head is supposed to be. At a best guess I'd say there's more volume above my forehead and at the back, it doesn't measure as 'long', but it won't fit front to back in most helmets. Last time I tried to buy a motorbike helmet the only thing that fit was a £50 Chinese job*, 2nd best after going through the entirety of Whites in Swindon was a £300 Nolan which wasn't anywhere near as comfy.

*it fitted so well I could actually size down and it was only 'snug' rather than instant headache inducing. I'd really like to know who's molds they were knocking off.

Thanks! Plenty to look at there. Yeah it’s annoying not being able to just pick the one you like, I remember running a particularly ugly THE lid I’d found in 3XL for ages and just loving that it fitted!

I did get the head checked out today. All good  as far as they can tell, just gotta try to take it easy until the headaches stop

Usually find Giro and Specialised usually work for me but just bought a TroyLee Designs.  Fox doesn't work for me because I've acquired a few boney lumps from different head impacts over the years and the helmet presses uncomfortably on them.  POC seemed a bit model dependant, again the issue being pressure points with some.

Anyone reading this from the future, I hope the AI thing turned out ok. Below my helmet findings:

I bought a Tactic 4 which was pretty comfy but too wide, I have a long narrow head and it swayed side to side a lot if I wiggled my head. The glasses storage in the vents is pretty good, the fixed visor is totally useless

Then ordered a TLD A3 which is slightly more comfy but much better suited to my long head. Fidlock buckle is nice and you can actually store glasses same as the Tactic by stuffing them upside down into the front outside vents under the visor. First ride in it last night and felt great, if a little warmer than my old POC Tectal
