eurotunnel – turn up and pay?

I have to drive to belgium later today, returning tomorrow.

I don’t know exactly when i’ll get to folkstone today, or when I will be returning tomorrow.

Can I just turn up and pay rather than pay 3 times the price for a ‘flexible’ fare?

Yes but its expensive – 50% to 100% more than the buy the day before price, still cheaper than flexi plus I think

Just checked price is £169 this afternoon and also same price Tue and Wed afternoon so no premium. Morning crossings or Thur are £85. Flexi plus is £214 – all one way

Also short stay returns are cheaper than two 1 ways so why not take a punt on return time tomorrow, just book a ti e which is “safe” ?

well i’m either booking now at £54 and fixing the time I have to be in folkstone (5hrs drive away) or winging it…

I see no fares lower than £169 for today on their website

As long as you’re not on the cheapest discounted tickets, I find they’re very flexible on travel times anyway. Book for a few hours after you think you need, and just turn up early, most of the time they just let you on the next one.

Yes – as simon_g says – they are very accommodating. I’d book at roughly the right time at the cheapest price. Look at their terms – they give you a generous window.

Depends how busy they are, we have been an hour early and had to wait, we’ve been 20 mins late (before departure time but after check-in) and had to wait 2hrs – both at busy times though. We use it once every month/6 weeks

I traveled on channel tunnel last week. Turned up two hours early for return part of trip and just drove straight onto the next train, without any additional charge. Was really impressed. Arrived back in UK 1hr before our train was due to depart from Calais (not taking into account time difference)

yeah, they are generally very flexible with arrival times, I’ve found. I see little need for a ‘flexi’ ticket TBH.

For future reference, you can also use 2-for-1 Tesco Clubcard vouchers for it. I’ve travelled a couple of times for ~£50 worth of points.

where are you driving to in Belgium?
Traffic queues here can be quite ‘challenging’ if you have to cross Brussels or Antwerp
you may wish to factor in some extra time…..
(I commute via 75km of highway & this can take between 35mins – 2 hours depending of time of the day)

For reference. Booked on 19:50, turned up at 18:00, moved onto 18:50 shuttle, got cancelled, now boarding 19:20.

It’s a long way from Devon to Folkestone.

Don’t turn up and pay you will get shafted. We tried this and couldn’t believe it. We just laughed in their faces and went to the ferry and paid a pretty normal ferry price and rolled straight on. If our phone had been working we could have booked on line outside the terminal and saved a whole load of folding.

Simon g +1 they are pretty flexible anyway, the idea of booking later than planned is a good one. Plus the french dude on the carriage with the radio said you have a couple of hours if you are late, ‘it iz how do you say?, no problem’
