Changing a 456 to 2×9 and got a seat tube mounted front mech, even at the very bottom of the seat tube there’s a load of clearance above the chainrings, any advice on this please?

That doesn’t look right no, but that may be becasue the outer ring is missing. Was there one on before? Or are you going from single to double up front?

You might want to consider a top swing (standard) mech

Just a guess, but wrong sort of mech? You want a conventional instead of a top swing? Or have I got that the wrong way around…?

Looks like you need a bottom swing front mech instead of a top swing to get it closer.

It must work though since it did for 3×9 – if thats what it was before??

Looks wrong regardless of weather it works.

You want a 2×10 bottom swing front mech.

The mech says 2×10 on it, so it wasn’t 3x before I assume.

There’s also no missing outer ring – the chainset looks to be a 2×10 one.

As above, you need a conventional/bottom swing mech by the looks of things. Sure on-one can advise.

Just a thought – and I don’t know the answer to this – do you have a 2sp front shifter too? Not sure if just using 2 speeds of a 9sp 3x shifter pulls the right amount of cable.

Triple shifter will be fine, it will just have a ‘dead shift’ if you set it up right, ie. press the button and nothing happens.
You need a dangly-down type of mech like this

SRAM and Shimano front derailleurs have the same cable pull ratio, so they are an option as well.

    It’s a SRAM 2 speed shifter.

As said above due to the size of the BB shell you need a high clamp not a low.

I made the same mistake on my 456c 🙂

In my experience you’ll get closer with a conventional mech but you still can’t get it low enough.

Tyre is still on the the wrong way round though

are they the right chainrings for the 2×10 set up?

Looks like a 22-32 set up which is a bit small.

Agree with most of the above.
Need a dropped mech like pic above. Rings look very small for 2×10.
    Tyre on right way.

    It’s a 2×9 set up, 22-32. Just a 2×10 spider is all.

Cheers for all the help! Just have to find one now!

Tyre is still on the the wrong way round though

The tyre is the same as my Rubber Queen, it’s direction is dependant on whether it’s fitted to the front or the rear of the bike. If you look again you will see front and arrow pointing upwards and rear with arrow pointing down. And as it’s on the rear. … It’s fitted correctly.

Tomorrow’s lesson how to inflate a tubeless tyre

as long as you screw in the limit screw to the right point you will hae no dead shift

That long cable is an A&E visit waiting to happen

Deffo doesn’t look right, the gravel needs weeding then you’ll be fine.

Looks wrong to me. You have a front mech, for starters.

It definitely doesn’t look right to me. You need a granny ring but no big ring?

doesnt look right but looks like my setup…
i’ve got an old deore 9sp dual pull front mech that sit in a similar position…the chainset is a 9sp LX with the outer ring replaced by a bash…if i drop the mech any lower it doesnt shift so i’ve left it looking like yours…but it works fine…so i suppose if it works then leave it as it is…

you need to stop worrying about your daft gear set up and get some weeding done.
