I had a rather nasty crash on the road bike last week and i managed to loose 3 of my front teeth. Im on the road to recovery now, cuts are healing and swelling is going down, but im now starting to think of the next step which is replacing my lost teeth.

Ive had one appointment with my dentist on the day i crashed, he helped to patch me up and i made an appointment to return to see him next week for him to get a better look and to start making a bridge to temporarily give me some teeth.

However i realise that im going to want something more permanent to replace the missing teeth and i have started to look at tooth implants. This side of things is very new to me, im sure my dentist will be able to give me advice but at the same time im trying to be proactive and look at what options i have.

So what im asking is if there are any dentists on here or if anyone has had dental implants then can you recommend a private dentist.

Any help that you can give me will be much appreciated, im feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment.

    Thanks very much, Jon

don’t get a bridge. they have to ruin the teeth on either side of the gap to fit it.

    Where abouts are you Jon?

If the location suits I can then either recommend my old dentist in London (who did my implant), or my new dentist in Henley (now doing implants for my mother in law). Both excellent.

Also, there was a thread here a while back about implants as well, may be some useful info there.

Further, FWIW, happy to talk about my experience with getting an implant.

Yet another edit, forgot to say that the London dentist replaced half of one of my front teeth after a climbing accident. That was 15 years ago and I now can’t remember which tooth it was!

If you still have roots left then a Cerec crown may be an option, all done in 1 visit as they machine the crown from solid while you wait.

Thanks for the help everyone, it is much appreciated. Im in South Wales but would travel a reasonable distance. I just want it done right.

If you want it done right, you need a good dentist. I can recommend one in Cambridge if you like, even though it’s a bit for for you to travel. He is _very_ good at implants though.

Have a read of this http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/dental-implants-worth-it

I hope you get it all sorted soon.
I’m guessing that the teeth were broken and couldn’t be ‘popped’ back in by a first aider on site.

The teeth werent too bad but unfortunatly there was so much blood in my mouth and it happened so quickly i didnt realise my teeth had come out. I didnt find them until i returned to where i crashed about 4hrs later.
If id thought about what was happening at the time i would have looked for my teeth when the incident happened, but there we go nothing i can do now.

    thanks for the link

Keep the teeth and take them with you to the implant specialist.

I can’t stress enough how you need the whole job doing properly by a proper surgeon with references. At the moment I’m still (after a year and my purse being hundreds of pound lighter) going through the motions of having my implant re-done after a former dentist decided to take on some of the work that the surgeon should do.

Also don’t try and do this on the cheap, its awful what’s happened to you (mine was also a front tooth). At least you don’t need a frontal labotony!

Can anyone recommend some good dentists in the Newcastle area please as I need to some root treatment as well as crown next month. I don’t mind going private so long as the price is not very expensive.

Hey Cozmo. Have asked our dentist and have a recommended implant surgeon in Cheltenham. Mail me if you want the details.

Chewkw – as per the other thread, the price will be high. Happy to ask our dentist if she has a Newcastle recommendation.

For both – the reason I am happy to put forward her recommendations is because of her dental integrity (!) and the quality of her work. That of course in no way guarantees anything!

    chewkw:

    Try these guys: Keith Belfield
    Or these guys: Osborne Dental

(a mate Jim works at the first one – and he’s just getting into MTB so gives you something to talk about while you wait for your mouth to go numb and a mate’s wife works at the second)

the only thing that scares me a bit about the implants is; in another crash like you just had, what would happen to your teeth and jaw bone?!

…so it would be bad idea to have a trained dentist who is learning to do impants put one in? My dentist charges 2K unless you have it done by a trainee implantologist – in which case it is 1K. Was seriously considering it til I read this thread

As I understahnd it the same as what would happen to your normal teeth. The ti screw that holds the tooth fuses with the bone tissue and is just as strong as your normal teeth. I am just in the process of having an implant (the first part is behind me and I am just waiting the three months for the screw to fuse and the wound to heal). The German system is a little different to back in the UK and I think the whole proceedure is more widely available. Incidentally my insurance are paying the bulk of it too! 🙂

Around the £2,000 mark sounds good to me.

Never bothered myself when I knocked 2 front teeth out, £2k is a lot of money to spend when you may do the same again, cost me £100 for a plate and no issues with it here

Had mine done a few years back (as on other thread) – painless and has worked well. I went via my dentist in London who is excellent, have been there for 15+ years and have recommended quite a few people who are now patients. (She sorted me out after mis-treatment by a another dentist who frankly should have been struck off). She put me out to a specialist in West London for the implant. Not cheap but the only way I was going to keep my teeth.

If you decide to try them, ask for Rosie and say the good-looking brother sent you! (Long story…!). Link below.

I meant that the tooth with being held in by a Ti screw and would not be able to break off. Being is securely fixed might cause more damage than the normal knocking out of teeth.
I don’t know if they are designed to break off or fail safe in some way…

As I understand it, they are bonded with cement, which isn’t permanent.

This thread is giving me flashbacks…

My mouth was pretty badly smashed up & subsequent infection meant that there wasn’t sufficient ‘bedding’ for implants (would need synthetic stuff, I guess = megabucks). I’ve learned to live with a partial denture. I miss biting apples, though.

    I had a proper colgate smile as a kid… and then I discovered mountainbiking. 😳 😀
