  • Dementia respite short holiday breaks with care?

My 67 yo father is suffering from early onset dementia and is now at the point where he really can’t be left to his own devices. He’d be like a Labrador puppy and would eat all his food in the first 5 minutes then loose all their savings on click bait email scams 😉
We’d love for my mum to come over for a solo visit with the grand kids and give her a break from the 24/7 on duty care she gives my dad. Currently they visit with us together every 6months, but it’s clear that the removal from his home routine is not just a strain on him but a huge added stress for my mum even with us here to help.
Whilst he can’t be left home alone, he’s also not ready for a full time care home. Has anyone come across short break activity operations that combine respite care and activities with physically active participants?
I’m thinking of a PGL style holiday center that specialises in the needs of Alzheimer’s/FTD sufferers.
    Any experiences?

I suspect you’ll need to pay for a full-time live-in carer as due to ‘austerity’ all local social services will offer is visiting carers and the number of visits will be based on an assessment of his abilities.
Care in a respite facility will likely be the better option though. Given that things will eventually get worse for your dad as regards routine disruption it may be wise to start on the care facility path sooner rather than later to get him used to the idea and reduce future stresses and strains.
(My mum hated going in but realised that dad needed the break from the routine, she was suffering from epilepsy and reduced mobility from a brain cancer op so quite profoundly disabled in some respects).

I’m not sure where you’re based, but my grandparents (gran with mild dementia but fit and active, grandad with physical disabilities, both caring for each other in their own home currently) had a 10 day spell of respite at Leuchie House in East Lothian recently. They have space for both carers and patients and organised day trips to the coast etc for their residents. My grandparents seemed to enjoy it, and it gave them (and my mum) a bit of respite.

I don’t get any kickback for this 😉 but have met some of the people who do the work, and genuinely you will not find a better bunch of people to care for your father.
