Oooh – those look pretty much the ticket bearback…

It will mean new chainrings/BB and dropping cross bike compatibility but Spawn see to sum it up …

Why shouldn’t young riders benefit from the advances happening in adults mountain bikes?

I’d bet these are as light or lighter than the Islabike combo of Ti/Carbon square taper and cranks and 1/2 the price…

just get square taper bmx cranks and then get a bb with a spindle that suits unless you’re really looking for a project

My son runs these on his race bmx, they’re light enough and stiff enough, and I got them for £20…

I looked in the shed. There’s a pair of Suntour XC comp cranks but no chainrings. Very much NOT hollow, but if you decide to go down the engineering route they are yours for postage/a pint. They’d polish up rather nicely I reckon.

Reading back, I’ve now lost track of whether this is helpful to you at all – bcd might well be different?

I tend to agree with Spawn: 175s are arguably too long for nearly everyone!

Cheers Chips 😀 The Suntour won’t help me as I’ve already got 2 sets square taper… though if anyone does need some but doesn’t feel confident cutting and drilling I’d volunteer the same pint and post 😀

I’m 5’10” (arguably with short legs or a long body) and 175mm’s do my hips in.

@ianpv : I can’t see any NW chainrings that would fit though… @ that price it leaves enough savings to buy them if I could find them.

Those GT ones seem ideal….assuming its a standard 104 BCD

I’m still wondering about the epoxy on some hollow cranks (given I have a few lying about)….

    Something like …
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wurth-Epoxy-Repair-Stick-Aluminium/dp/B006BZ5GS4

When fully cured the material can be drilled, tapped, filed, sanded or overpainted.

here’s my hollowtech shortened cranks. Drilled 20mm hole, had a plug of ally bar welded in then re-drilled 140mm and tapped.

Very cool….. not sure where I’d get welding done but I could look into that I suppose.

Anyone have any ideas on the epoxy idea in the meantime?
