After a weekend faffing with two extension leads to drill fence brackets, I’m thinking of getting a cordless drill but what a lot of choice.

It’ll be mainly for intermittent DIY duties, ideally two batteries, able to hammer drill when needed and potentially with a battery system that can power a jigsaw and angle grinder and possibly a circular saw.

What chance any deals landing this bank holiday?

Self bump, which seems to be the only way I can get my posts to appear in the forum…

109 quid gets you a basic dewalt XR 18v drill and a couple of small batteries. That will be fine and there’s any number of bare tools you can add on in future.. however tools such as angle grinders are pretty heavy on batteries so you may find you’d need to buy bigger batteries at a later date..

Bosch also an option at similar price point.

Or.. put aside tool snobbery and go for the Screwfix own brand Erbauer which are reported to be fine.. Smaller range of tools but they cover all the basics. 90quid gets you one with a 4ah battery.. and the drill is brushless which generally gives more power and longer run time.

The Bosch Power4All system should fit your requirements – I have had a hammer drill (with 2 x 1.5Ah li-Ion batteries) and I’ve yet to have a DIY job where it (or the combined run time of the two batteries) has let me down and I have done some quite large DIY jobs in the nine years I have owned it.

And just yesterday I bought a grass strimmer (it came with a 2.5Ah battery as the deal was too good to just get the bare version).

BTW, I bought it from this place which was cheaper than Amazon etc.

In fact it is almost bang-on your budget with 2 1.5Ah batteries

I’ve had the previous generation of the Erbauer 18v combi drill for the past 3-4 years, and it’s served me well.

The 2 x 2Ah battery version is probably adequate for occasional DIY use and comes in at £90.

    Erbauer EBCD18Li-2 18V 2.0Ah Li-Ion EXT Cordless Combi Drill

I went for a version with 2 x 4AH batteries for a bit more ooomph! and longer battery life.

If you can stretch a bit beyond the £100 budget, I’d consider going for the Erbauer ECD18-Li-2 18V 4.0Ah Li-Ion EXT Brushless Cordless Combi Drill for the same price, and buy an additional battery for £40.

I got a Bosch 12V system with a spare battery – seems great for my needs of Ikea furniture assembly, rotor bolts and drilling fences… Battery lasts forever in my non-DIY world

I bought a DeWalt DCD795, with a 1.5AHr battery, for £99 from Wickes a year or so ago. I’ve found it to be excellent so far, and no problems with battery life, although if you’re doing loads of work, then perhaps a higher capacity battery would suit better. The hammer function isn’t bad for a cordless; if you need more power for doing lots of drilling into concrete, masonry etc, then a decent corded drill will be a better bet anyway. But basically, anything from the main manufacturers such as Bosch, DeWalt, Makita etc will be fine. Things like spare batteries will be easier to find from those three. A ‘brushless’ drill will offer higher torque and efficiency for a given power rating.

I’ve not seen so many good deals on BHs, since CV kicked in, probably because demand for tools for DIY etc is a lot higher at the moment, plus supplies are problematic cos of brexit etc. Best is to Google for reviews, then try to find a good deal on something that you like that gets good ratings really.

” Really good drill, it’s a shame the double zip with string on the carry bag was designed by a clown, not any clown, but a clown having a bad day. Great drill though. “

Review on the Screwfix site for the Erbauer drill 😀

If you can get this, you’ll be sorted.

    https://www.toolstation.com/bosch-gsb-18v-21-18v-cordless-combi-drill/p77945?searchstr=bosch%20combi%20drill

I know they have stock in York, but you have to go fetch. If you pop town names into the search they will show you where the stock is.

I’ve a few Bosch blue 18V now but they are generally more expensive than Makita and their oscillating tool uses a non-standard connection, but they are super. I’m sort of going Bosch Blue for stuff that gets tons of use, and Worx for garden and occasional battery power stuff. Lidl and Aldi for corded odbballs like my mitre and sabre saws that only come out once in a blue moon.

Over budget at the moment but the Makita DHP453 is about £150, and realistically the 3.0Ah battery will last longer than you can without a break and charges in about 20 minutes.

They sometimes come as a bundle with a box of drill bits, hole saws etc which makes them better value.

It’s not quite as good as the next one up which has the better motor with even more torque. But it’s a million miles away from the cheaper Makita branded stuff (G-series, C-series which isn’t much cheaper).

The battery system across all the tools is a bonus, but I don’t make much use of it, I don’t use many other tools often enough to justify the prices Vs mains powered ones.

Now I did not know that you could a cordless trimmer etc on this cordless system so thanks johndoh for pointing that out…that opens up a whole new world of thoughts…

    Appreciate the input so far,

I’m thinking of going with Ryobi as I fancy a bunch of their tools like the sander, router, multi-tool etc.

They seem to be quite well reviewed for DIY stuff.

My 10 year old Makita hammer drill is still going strong.

Is the Aldi set up any good, single charger and battery and buy the tools you need?

The dewalt one recommended in the first reply is currently £78 with a single battery.
    https://www.diy.com/departments/dewalt-xr-18v-1-3ah-li-ion-cordless-combi-drill-dcd776c1-gb/765799_BQ.prd?storeId=1180&ds_rl=1272379&ds_rl=1272409&ds_rl=1272379&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIn-DCo7Oh8AIVzdnVCh1vdAJ0EAQYASABEgI2ufD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Or £100 for a 2nd battery. A 2nd battery for £22 is a good deal, usually theyre more than that alone.

In the STW tradition of recommending what you’ve got:

    https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/ryobi-one-18v-15ah-li-ion-cordless-combi-drill-2-batteries-r18pd3-215sk-3711667

It’s a combi drill so has hammer drill function which Ryobi call percussion. Can be had a fiver cheaper without the case on Amazon also.

I picked up an electric mower of theirs second hand on Gumtree, and there’s a big range of stuff all using the same batteries/charger. Worth noting that although the mower can’t cope with the little batteries that come with the drill, vice versa is fine.

I got an Erbauer 18v drill and 4.0Ah battery and charger for under £100. It’s fine for DIY duty and the 18v is just so much better than the Bosch 14v drill I had before. Still bust out the chorded drill for heavy duty stuff, still significantly more power than the cordless, but for 99% of jobs it’s more than adequate. Had it a year now. Just bought the matching torque driver tonight actually.

I’ve done my whole house with a Ryobi combi drill and impact driver.

The impact driver struggled a bit on the big 6.5mm 150mm fencing screws it it got there in the end

I got a dewalt brushless from screwfix last year, its a great bit of kit. I just got the single battery one for £100 but it’s not available just now and the double battery version has gone up a bit and is £150 now.

Erbauer ext brushless stuff has performed flawlessly for the past 18 months or so since I bought them, they’ve recently launched EXT elite cell batteries, the 4.0ah is more compact than their original 4.0ah EXT batteries and compatible with all EXT 18v range

I got the Einhell from Wickes, we used it to drill through and break up the concrete bedding of fenceposts and it worked as well as my wired drill. Happy with it, so bought the chainsaw and the strimmer which use the same battery.

If the budget isn’t movable: Bosch

If you can stretch it: 18V Makita

    All IME.
