  • Clippers for a baldy (not Wahl)

    My dome resembles something akin to the offspring if a golf ball and a 50p piece were able to mate. I’ve been shaving my head myself for many years with a set of wahl super taper clippers but it’s become increasingly uncomfortable the less hair I have, especially on the top where there is a flat blade on a curved surface and only a small portion of the cutting edge is in contact with my head.

    Is there anything else that may be more comfortable and contours to the head better? I’ve seen the skull shaver style ones that look good but fear they may give too close a cut, like you’d get if shaving your face? I use a 0.5 grade attachment so I’m pretty close to the bone as it is so maybe it’s not an issue.

    Any advice or recommendations from fellow baldies?

    Thanks

    Pretty much anything really. I absolutely loved the old round Babylis clippers, but after mine gave up the ghost after many years of service, I got they’re replacement which is just as good

    Every time these threads come up either me or Binners says babyliss crew and the other agrees.

    Threally are good. My round ones are still going strong.

    We do indeed. You can get copies of the original Babyliss ones, though they don’t do them any more, so I don’t know what the quality of them is like

    I wish I could just buy another set of these

    I’ve got one of those Remington clippers, it came from Indonesia, IIRC, possibly one of the last ones available during the early days of lockdown. Been using it ever since. I give it a very quick spritz with WD40 every couple of times I use it, and it whizzes away quite happily. I didn’t pay that much for it though, I think mine was £25. That was around three years ago, though.

    I’ve been using a pitbull platinum for a couple of years and it is excellent

    I’ve got that Remington in the first reply, does the job well. I’m only at 2.5mm but will take off 3 weeks worth of growth without bother.

    Another vote for the Remington Quick Cut, does my receding bonce to an acceptable standard with minimum fuss.

    …and minimum fuzz.

    I really like the 5000 series Philips. Proper battery that gives you enormous endurance in 1 hour, self sharpening, water cleaning, rotary adjustment etc…

    £36 delivered at the moment minus £10 for first order on Philips direct site.

    Thank you for all of the information and recommendations fellow baldies!

    Couple of quick questions if I may.. @binners and @joshvegas The babyliss one above – are the blades flat and it’s the bit in between the two cutting blades that’s curved? Hard to tell on the photos.

    @shadowrider
    is there any variation in the length of cut with the pit bull shaver and if not how close is it?

    Thanks again all!

    @nickewen
    – the blades are indeed flat at either end of a curved plate. It works really well as its contoured nicely to your bonce, which is what you’re after.

    Another pointer for everyone, no matter what clippers you’re using, buy yourself some Wahl blade oil. It makes everything a lot smoother

    Nice one, thank you for that Binners and the tip on blade oil. I’ve been using GT85 which is probably not ideal.. but I do like the smell 🙂

    Any reason not to just bite the bullet and shave it? I’ve been shaving mine for years, and although I started with a Bic I quite quickly moved to a classic safety razor (Merkur Futur adjustable).

    Once you get used to it you can get a proper bowling ball shave in about 15mins. Having said that, I can definitely see why people might not want to take a razor blade to the bonce!

    This! Just embrace the smoothness. Wet shaving the swede all the way for me now. I do sometimes use a 0.2mm shaver if I’ve been lazy but I love the shiny look now!

    I did wet shave my face about a month ago, which is something I rarely do but needed a reset. I went down stairs and my son just looked at me and said “You look like a ball sack”.

    I now have a beard again!

    Christ, I can have the other 2 S’s as well in that time!
