about knee high. Venice. I’m thinking Little Egret or something like that. Not as big as a heron and clearly the wrong colour

I think you’re right with Little Egret, quite common in the UK now as well.

Yeah, Little Egret, they’ve become quite common in some areas, regular breeding pairs in the UK, and Great White Egrets are now regular breeding birds in the UK, I’ve seen them down on the Avalon Marshes near Glastonbury, and up around the the Severn Bridges feeding on the exposed mud flats.
Not mistakable for any other birds in the UK, except perhaps for storks, which have black wingtips.

This was in Venice yesterday. It was wetter than a wet weekend in Wetsville, and I’m not talking about the canals or lagoon

Graham! Graham! Get your scrawny white arse back in here.
And you take off my best yellow wellies.
And what the hell are you doing wearing my nice tights.
When your father hears about this, you’re for the high jump mister!

Little Egret. A small white heron basically. Making a comeback in the UK and they seem to get on well with the local herons.

I bet they wouldnt get on with that miserable bastard heron up by Hardcastle Crags. 😉

There’s loads around Morecambe bay. I normally see one or two on the shore grass when out for a walk. I had a ride past Leighton Moss one evening and there must have been over 20 roosting in a tree.

They aren’t making a comeback in the uk, they’re colonising. First appeared late eighties.

    Ho! The Megapode!

    😀 😀

Crawling with them in San Francisco when I did a wee ride there last year, definitely more common than the heron is here it seems!
