Daughter has just started taking lessons and nan has given her a car ( lucky thing, little yaris )
Question is what’s the best ( read cheapest ) way to get her in it legally? Is it for me or mum to put it in one of our names and insure it with her as a named driver or otherwise ??

No, insurance fraud (fronting the policy) isn’t the best thing to do. Phone around, ask about monitoring devices, and suck up the best quote is what you do

If it’s her car, & she is the main driver, then a definite NO.

    FRONTING.

A GPS tracker insurance policy is the route I took.

Plus a car with a small engine.

    Makes it bearable (<£1000 p.a.).

Think of it as an investment across the lifetime of your child, and then it’s not so expensive 8O.

While she is only learning to drive, can you or your partner (or whoever) use it as your main car and have her as a named driver? Once she has passed, the GPS tracker option looks to be the best bet.

Put her as the policy holder and add yourself/nan etc as a named driver. It can take around £500 off a £1200 policy and is completely legit as she is the main driver, but the additional more experienced drivers appear to make her a lesser risk.

And put an older named driver on the policy. For my youngest we added his 70 year old gran who has a clean record etc and it took £200 off the £2000 policy.

5 year old Fiat Panda 1.1 still cost more than it was worth to insure for an 18 year old lad though……

Older doesn’t equal better, by 70 they’re probably higher risk again, adding yourself would be better than your parents. Get a low mileage policy too – don’t just blindly put 12k if the reality is that she’ll be doing 2k at most (whilst learning at least).

Was done last week if you search. Black box, small engine, not a model kids like to drive and crash eg Corsa, you or partner as a named driver.

Expect quotes the wrong side of £2k

My lad is 20 just past his test 3weeks ago. All the online places like meerkat were near 3k on a Vauxhall corsa. We got it down to £1200 on a 2004 1.2 sxi corsa him as main driver with black box fitted and the wife on the policy as a second driver. This is fully comp with breakdown cover with tesco.. It’s worth spending the day phoning round and shopping on line. Also we found the newer the car it was cheaper but not by much.
Good luck hope you find some thing for her.

I’m not sure why peoples quotes are so high, I’m 20 and got insured on a 1.6 05 Mazda for 700 all in.

tbh I wouldn’t insure her until she’s passed her test, and then as others have said the cheapest/legal way is in her name and add a low-risk named driver.

Mate has just had this fitted to his daughters car. The stories the installer related to him on why they are a good idea set his mind at rest….

    Because your 20.

I just got hammered due to the mrs losing her no claims – 1 years no claims is a 30% discount.

    Im paying 500 gbp for a **** 69 bhp mpv – age 28 i have the same car same age , 5 years ncb – 175 quid !

I was literally shouting at the woman down the phone when she came out with that price…..we were insuring a 120bhp well modified frontera prior to that for 350 quid. And they wanted another 150 quid to insure the blingo. For the remaining 9 months.

    Insurance are asshats.

Also low milage doesnt always make it cheaper , ive found it cheaper for my van to put 20k rather than 10k…. All about getting out of that average crashes alot bracket i guess. – move folk will say they do 10k i guess…. I do more than 10 but less than 20.

When i was 17 i was on my dads policy on his commuter fiesta i borrowed outside of working hours cost 600 quid, when i came to insure my escort my self it cost me 1200 quid, so fronting ( even when legal) still costs you/your daughter in the long run.

Citroen are expensive to insure. it cost me more to insure a Berlingo than a modded forester turbo…
and I’m old enough to be someone’s grandad, or so i’ve been told

Bite the bullet is the best in long run. Just as a named driver, like said above is illegal, but doesn’t build her any no claims, so it stays higher for longer. I am 21, and coming upto the 3rd year driving on my current car and it has halved roughly each year, while building ncb

Youngsters tend not to drive and crash 1.6 Mazdas. Their track record with Corsas, Saxos, etc 🙄

    Totally agree.

After 2 years NCB I am still paying nearly £680 for a 1.6 Toyota Corolla auto gear. AAggrrhhh …

Car is parked at a secure with CCTV location.

The price is all due to the location with proximity to some feral grounds I guess.

    🙁

you ought to be paying through the nose for an unqualified 17yo – what on earth was the thinking behind giving her a car and paying the running costs too? I just hope she hits a wall before she hits a cyclist.

Given the ciost I reckon it’d probably be best to insure them for 999m/pa on a g-wiz, concreted into a nuclear silo, and then actually have them get taxis everywhere.

Have a look at marmalade insurance. Car needs to be insured in its own right. 85 quid a month any car up to 30 grand and group 32 i think. We insured our 17 year old for our mondeo. Its a stand alone policy for learners.

    Tracker boxes all the way.

Teenagers should expect circa £2000 for insurance, which CAN go up when she passes and is not supervised.

I agree that all insurances are rip offs. Has anyone else heard of ” area excess ” ?

When I insured the Van, the cheapest quote had an extra £100 area excess. The Broker, Adrian Flux, said it was because the company they were quoting from must have had a lot of claims in my area.

The only thing I can think of the lots of claims must be the Roundabout near me that had nearly 100 ” crash for cash ” claims in a 18 month period. The guy at Adrian Flux asked me ” are you sure its that ” so I told him, put it this way, ITV sent a film crew out and did a feature on it for Granada Reports.

The captain – Were you never 17 and learning to drive then? I was once and no, I didn’t kill any cyclists.

Bit strong that and not very helpful at all.

Somewhat surprised at one or two people complaining at having high premiums due to age, experience and location – that will be the things that determine how much of a risk you represent then…. 😕

I’m 40 and pay £162 per car, business use, and think that is high.

We insured our 17 year old lad on a learner policy with Collingwood for £500 which has to be cancelled when test passed (balance refunded pro rata). Then went with Tesco Black Box for £1200.
Policies sourced through comparison sites, both in son’s name, fully comp, 6000m/year, parent as named driver etc on a Fabia 1.9 diesel.

Look carefully into who is cheapest to insure her after she has passed. When we were looking to insure my wife when she was learning to drive all quotes jumped up a lot after she passed her test as there wasn’t going to be a responsible adult (other than herself :roll) in the car with her.
