How many of us are like our grandparents and parents were at 40?

I’m almost 44, i don’t think my dad ever considered that cycling a round trip of nearly a hundred miles for some fish and chips was a good idea! 😆
Can’t say i can imagine him at 40 throwing himself off steep hills on a stupidly expensive mtb either.

Mind you, he does still run his own motor racing team!

Surely its divide the age by three. Then its the middle “third”, until then you are “young” after the second third you’re old.

According to my dad (77 on Thursday) ten years older than he is. So 87ish.

Well middle age is a range not a year so it’s where the range begins therefore life span / 2 is not logical – that indicates the mid-point of the range if anything.

Anyway, the range is usually considered to start from 40 or 45 and then to end at 60.

No, cos you could live to be 120 like that French woman. She spent (or would have in the UK) HALF her entire life as a pensioner. By the time she died, the point where we might have a mid life crisis turning 40 was EIGHTY years ago. Her great grandkids could have been of retiring age.

I find long lives like that staggering.

    Don’t know

    BUT

Late thirties and I was flying

    Forties I was coping

Fifties and it hurts more when I fall off, and I know my riding is becoming a bit wooden

    AND

straying to the allusion to getting a new woman

Perhaps you are middle aged when you think you have realised……….

that the thought of a woman is probably warmer then the reality.

Considering the amount I smoke and drink, then I probably waved at it a good few years ago.

I hit 40 this year (actually, considering what I put my body through in my early 20’s, I’m exceeding expectations)

When you think that counting backwards from your current age every birthday means you think you’re highly unlikely to get to zero. I’m borderline….

When my eyes started to go at 45 was when I realised. I still dont quite believe it tho.

Music doesn’t progress in a linear fashion, it goes up in plateaux. We went into a bar in Brighton last weekend – they were playing Revolver, and not in an ironic way. They were playing it because it’s still good (and along with Dark Side… is still a prime influence for young bands) That came out 45 years ago. If you’d have played 45 yr old music in 1966 you’d only have done it as a joke. Puttin’ on the Ritz FFS.

Age doesn’t affect us in the same way it affected our antescedents. we have no precedent. Keep going till yer fukt.

PS – I’ll never be old enough to want to play golf, or buy clothes at Marks & Spencer.

I still have to sort out my childrens’ problems. I increasingly, and then decreasingly, have to sort my elders problems.

    I guess I am middle aged, but I don’t ****’ feel it!

It’s the age when you reluctantly budge from viewing the future in terms of all the endless unhindered possibilities open to you… and start to see it in terms of personal constraint and boundaries I guess?
