  • anyone else still using an ancient snowboard?

I popped into my local snowboard shop to wish my mate happy Christmas, just as he was texting me to see if I wanted to join them on an alps trip over new years, result 🙂
I’m normally lucky enough to try next years demo boards when I ride, but as conditions are pants out there currently, it’s only fair I dig out my old board.
Not used it in a few years and i’d forgotten how battered it is. Waxing it brings back great memories from a season in Les Arcs in 2002/2003.
So anyone else ragging about on old school boards or is my 2001 Morrow (josh dirksen) Truth the oldest?

No but I’ve got a pair of 48-year-old skis I still use. Rossignol Medaille de Bronze with screw-on edges and blue polythene bases. They ski remarkably well in a plough-through-anything way.

No thanks Matt, was just wondering who else rode older boards. Quite looking forward to riding an old style camber board again.

I’ve got a Simple 158 that still sees use. I bought it in 1993 and it was a few years old then!

Hmmmm. I’m a relative modernist then, with my Santa Cruz Perfect 11. It’s old to me.

I’ve got a 2001 board that I bought in whistler. I reckon it’s had 5 or 6 weeks worth of riding in that time. I see no need to change it. Not sure I’d notice the difference a new one and an old one.

2003 burton canyon, hasn’t had an awful lot of use and I’m nowhere near good enough to warrant an upgrade!

I’ve got my first season Salamon X Sceams. Complete revelation when they were released. Really short, really wide, lots of side cut. Rather long and straight now. I was talking about my touring rig this week – Atomic R9. Got them out of the garage 78mm under foot which makes them super thin now.

I still like both of them but would have something modern if I hadn’t had kids.

I’ve been using one of these since 2005. Supposed to be only an entry level board but it has done me OK. I just can’t see where the extra money goes compared with entry level bikes and top models.

Burton Johan 163 which I think is from 2000, Black base with green flaming skull graphic. Fantastic board for off piste adventures. Ive been told more than once by the cool kids how awesome my old school board is. They may have been taking the piss, it’s hard for us old guys to tell sometimes.

I’ve got a K2 FatBob from mid 90s, but I don’t use it anymore. I spent some good times riding chest deep Utah pow on that board….

Got a 2000 Ride Yukon 164 hanging up in the garage, carbon torsion forks and everything, bought new when I did a season in Fernie. Hasn’t been used in 8 years or so. Lovely board, shame to see it going to waste but worth nothing so I just hang on to it for sentimental value and in the hope I’ll go on another snow holiday at some point

Kept my 2nd ever board, a 1994/95 Type A Nate Cole in a sleeve. I kept that as it’s nice to look back on.

Got a 1997 generics true wood in my garage. Still gets the occasional look in when it snows here. Other board is a 08/09 hatchet.

Thanks devash, Earl has it, a Rippey from 94-96. Always loved it.

I still have my Burton Twin, which I think is a ’94. I bought it second hand as an ex-rental and it has Switch bindings and a Pornstar sticker on it doood! 😆

It was too small for me back then and I suspect it would be absolute scheizenpoopen compared to the five year old Salomon I ride now.

    Edit:
    Found the internet’s only image. It’s a ’96.

Burton Canyon from 97, amazing in powder and off piste, so won’t be changing it til it falls apart…

That spinning Jim rippey and the brushie are classics.

Got all but one of my old boards… The oldest being a Ride from about 95… At least 5cm too small so that it was better on the dry slope

Still have my 99 custom. 2004 fish and 2007 malolo

Still completely happy to ride any of them. My fish is pretty much toast though. I really should retire it

As long as they still have pop older boards can be great, and it’s fun to ride something else for different conditions I think. Currently using a Burton 2001 Nu Japanese edition I picked up two weeks ago for £20

Love this thread! I’ve got an ’02 palmer carbon circle that is still by far the fastest board I’ve riden. Also got an ex erro etalla (sp?) nitro t2 with the van halen base from ’03 that get brought out when it snows. Always wanted an old Avalanche to ride with hard boots and a wetsuit like Damien sanders in critical condition. in fact I might have to visit ebay now.

I have a Burton Custom59 somewhere. Must be at least 17yrs old.
No bindings. Lent them to a young lad who lived down our street.
He did pretty good with them.

    I really wanted that Rippey!

I’ve got a 97 or 98 Salomon fs550 which still gets ridden. Either way, I think it was the first year they produced snowboards. There’s a 2001 Prior swallowtail too, which is an absolute beast. 176, Super stiff, really long sidecut, incredible in pow and carving on smooth piste, bit of a handful everywhere else!

Sold a Burton Balance, and sadly smacked the edge out of a 2001 Duotone MTX 168 which was my most favouritest board ever. 🙁

Now on a venture split and a Dupraz D1, which just looks old!

I’ve got an old Santa Cruz from the late nineties but never gets used anymore.

The board I ride every year though is a Burton custom 10 year anniversary one from 2006. Still a great board, I was going to buy a new one but I only ride for a week year nowadays since kids came along so will stick with the custom.

Burton Ross Powers from 2000. Very tight radius sidecut for a bit of excitement, I love the graphics and for some reason its base seems comfortably faster than anything else I’ve used since. However it’s pretty well knackered now with no wear left in the base and its successor (same model, a few years later which I never liked as much) is worn out to. But with a young child I’ve been off the mountain 3 years now so I’ll be back on these next time I go. I did try some newer boards a few years back but nothing really grabbed me.

    Still got this Rippey:

It’s still rideable, although the flex is shot. It got some horrendous base damage the first year I had it so it never got as much use as it might have, despite what’s still the best base repair I’ve ever seen (by Boardwise in Glasgow).

It saw some use as a carpet-jib board last winter, still got bindings on it!

Think my first ever board (a RadAir Always) is still at my parents’ house too.
