Orange San Francisco as long as you’re happy to flash a different rom onto it. Actually even with the crap Orange rom it’s still probably the best.

I’ve just been told by a mate who’s had several (for family) that the black ones are faster than the white ones.

    No, me neither.

I bet the white ones are identical too, but it’ll feel slower
every time you get it out of your pocket you’ll feel all eyes on you and hear muffled laughter.
“Come on, work faster you bastard!”

or, alternatively, maybe they do put the crappest innards in the white ones, assuming that the small child using it won’t notice

Orange San Fran has got great reviews. Got Galaxy S2 and Android is so much better than my old iPhone.

Have you thought about getting a used phone off ebay?

Flashing the rom is simples just follow this guide mine runs gingerbread and is vastly improved from the orange rom
    http://www.tekforums.net/guides-projects/how-to-install-android-2-3-gingerbread-on-orange-san-francisco-zte-blade/

This also unlocks and de-brands the phone best if all its free
