Anybody done it. Tried a maxxis 2.35 (which aren't the biggest) and it was a horrid shape with exposed side walls.

Thought a 2.6 nobby nic with apex sidewalls might be a good compromise between plus and not. But I only have a choice between either a 25mm internal or 40mm rear wheel

what I use right now on my full suspension bike:
25 mm internal rim size and 2.3 inch Enduro tyres
And I love this setup!

You like to use 2.6 inch tyres
My guess: internal rim size of around 30...32 mm might be VERY good
My guess: 40 mm doesn't work with 2.6 tyres..
😥

But good news: 25 mm internal rim will work! Not perfect but good (if this is the only choice you have)
😉
Would be my advice without being the tyre / rim expert

I've got 2.3s on 35mm and it's fine. 2.8 on 45mm also fine (apart from it being a trail blazer and having so all grip or side nibs).

I run a 2.6'' NN 29er on a Dually rim that is 39mm internally and 45mm externally. The tyre has a squarer profile than I guess is ideal but I've yet to experience (touches wood) any untoward rim or sidewall issues.

I've a 2.8 on a 45 internal looks fine and a 2.3 on a 45 internal not so good on the rear. I'd have thought a 2.6 would be OKISH 😉

I will be running this very set up (Minion DHF2.6/Rekon 2.6 combo) from about ... Thursday if you want to wait for an opinion!

Any comments Ben, now you've had a couple of weeks to test it out?

Hmmm is the benefit really worth all that extra rim weight? I reckon a 25mm internal will be fine with 2.6. it's really not so long ago we were all running 2.3 or 2.4 tyres on 19mm rims....

Marginal gains, and lots of people really won't the investment in a wheel build to find out IMO Rik.

On the opposite side I’m thinking of trying 2.6 but only have 25mm rims and wonder if they will round the tyres off too much?

got 2.75 on 50mm, if that's any use. It's good.

Dirt Wizard on a Hugo. It was designed round a rim that size, so you'd expect it to work.

Just trying to make use of a wheel I already have and not using. The 40mm DT rim wasn't all that heavy from memory - 580g I think plus you saved a bit with the special ali nipples it came with. Certainly on DT hubs the wheelset came in a bit under 2kg which is less than a standard hope wheelset on far narrower rims.

thinking more along the lines that people with plus bikes might be trying it rather than the other way round

i have 2.6 Nobby Nic on a 40mm WTB scaper. it's great.

tire profile just fine. not in the least too square.

2.6" is the biggest i could fit in my frame. got a 2.8 on the front and i'd say if anything the profile of the s.6 is better.

anyway, both are great. i don't notice the extra weight except perhaps when jumping. don't go very high. but that's partly my technique, or lack of. it's all in all nice and balanced and the differnce between the 2.6 27.5", and the 2.4 26" i had before is astounding.

go for it : )

For the few people who are running a 2.6 on a 40mm rim - how wide is the tyre at its maximum point?

i ran 2.35 on a 45mm external rim. the sidewall stuck out further than the tread but it worked ok. now contemplating 27.5x2.6 on a 35mm external rim

I've run 2.6 nic on my velocity dually 45 rims. Tyre comes up a true 2.6 with a flatter profile. No problems with the sidewalls in bits of peak district and slatey welsh stuff. Ideally I would say the optimum would be a 35mm rim, but wider certainly wasn't an issue for me

Not dead just this thread disappeared from view, which in my mind means it doesn't exist 🙂

Havent actually seated the tyres yet, but I did build the wheels. Maybe I will do that today and feedback!

Cheers Ben - just remember to get the vernier calipers on them once you've seated them :o)

In the winter I run a Chunky Monkey (only 2.4, but a 'big' 2.4) on a rabbit hole rim on the back of my Krampus. The RH rims are about 40mm internal.

It does square off the profile a bit, but works well.

So I _finally_ got round to finishing up the wheels. Notes:

2.6 on 40mm is actually 2.6, just a sneak over as it happens, but only on the sidewall, the tread is slightly under but we're talking 1mm. For those that don't know Maxxis measure tyres at Max PSI so the size you ride vs. the size on the side are not likely to be the same. I would expect these to be more like 2.65 at 40PSI. TBH I couldn't be bothered to pump them up to a pressure no one in their right mind would run.

Do they work? Yeah they're ace. I'm Running DHF 2.6 front, Rekon 2.6 back. The DHF is no better than a 35mm rim I would say, maybe a bit taller, definitely slightly exposed on the sidewall. Is it better? Probably not. Is it ruined? No, it works just fine.

The back I would say might actually be better. The lower pressure the 40mm rim offers means I can get a bit more bite from the shallower Rekon tread.. I think. TBH Its always hard to tell, what I can say is that running 2.6 on 40mm internal is 100% viable.
