Yes. But don't get hooked up on a frame size. We have had/still have a pile of 26er weeny frames. The 'smallest' frame is 12.5" 'size' but has longest top tube and reach...

My 10yr lad has a 13" frame Hotrock, but he actually prefers his Mums 15" Hotrock, I think that's down to its silly light weight though (rigid forks etc).
I've a box full of posh bits to jazz up his Hotrock when the weather improves. Even picked up some Sids...crikey, how light...!!!

But as Mat said, don't be too caught up on sourcing a tiny frame, its the top tube length that's key.

I built this one up for my son, he was almost 10 when he started riding it. I got the frame from Germany (after a thread on here). Forks, wheels, tyres, bars and post were spares I had in the garage. Built up 1x10, with I think a 28t ring on the front and short Thorn cranks. He has ridden loads on it, and hopefully another year or so before he out grows it!

You mean don't get too excited be seat tube length? Frame size is clearly quite important here! I've been looking for a while - and rather more seriously in recent weeks for a suitable frame for such a project and you're right that some things which come up small in the seat tube and listed as small are jump frames which presumably not only have a long TT, but are also massively overbuilt for the purpose, but then they're quite obvious.

On which note, any thoughts on where to get such a small frame, or anybody selling one? The only things coming up on ebay are full bikes which would then involve the hassle of selling on all the heavy bits I don't want.

We got another one. That's a 15 I think. She's outgrown that one now and - being nearly 15 - is interested in many other things. Not so much mountain bikes. If anyone wants a lovely custom turner 5-spot...

Sorry OP - didn't mean to hijack your thread. Building bikes for/riding with your kids is the best thing.

Not just jump bikes!

"Smallest" frame in length and stack was our Trek 4300, 13.5"
Next is Islabike Beinn 26 with Manitou forks.
Then Specialized Rockhopper (womens) 13"
Largest is Cannondale F900sl for length and stack, but smallest seat tube.
The Claud Butler is largest seat tube at 16", but shorter than Cannondale, but higher stack than all, including the 16" Zesty.

Frame 'shape' is important - because the Specialized and a Trek also had low BB's, making them real easy to get on and off with short legs...

Oh while I remember - and to your point re weight- we fitted narrow bars, wide range of (low) ratios, used fast rolling tyres as most of the riding was trail centre, easy natural trails and air shocks. Definitely worth getting the right kit if you can. The pink hope brakes were a bit of a find and I think we might have the last threaded pink hope BB in existence!

I built up a 14" Kona fire mountain for my boy last Christmas. I opted to get a set of 24" wheels from Superstar and kept the original 26" for when he outgrows the bike, hopefully yo get another six months out of it. It's a really good bike to ride, and his riding has came on leaps and bounds.

I may have an unused 152mm sram chainset which I bought for a project before Xmas and probably won't end up using.

I think the inbred it's better than the 456 for a kid, there was a thread a while ago and I think brant said add much. Maybe because it is not so tall at the front.

The only thing I'd add is my sons (nearly 11 year old who is riding an extra small trek) feet are size 6, if his positioning on the pedals slips forwards he actually catches his toes on the front wheel if cornering slowly with pedals flat.

I've built this up over the last few months, photo now out of date as it's now been converted to 1x10 XT/Deore mix inherited off my old bike, now 24.75lb

I got my mum (not quite 5') a xs Kona, Fire Mountain I think. Low stand over and fairly short. My son is twelve a d whilst he can ride my 16" 456 it is quite a stretch for him even when stood up, he's average height for his age.

I'd skipped over the inbred purely because I have a set of tapered recons off my old bike and the inbred wont take them. But I guess I could pick up a set of straight 1 1/8 forks second hand.

I built this Cube Access 13" up for 11yo Daughter for Christmas

I was going to buy a 14 inch inbred for the nephew as they were 118 around xmas, but forgot and they are back up to 199 🙁

Wish we had like buttons here sometimes as liking what I'm seeing some cool little bikes there people making me wonder what I'll be building for my nephew in a few years time as at mo he's 10 months old and now building him a 1950's sunbeam trike with massive over haul to look better than new.

I've got a 16" 456 evo (carbon) frame they have low standover but are really quite long, too much of a stretch for most young 'uns, a good few cm longer than other 16" frames I have.

I might be wrong but apart from the Turner above all the kids bikes have the handlebars set way above the saddle height. How many of you ride with bars higher than your saddle? None I bet?

My 8 year old (9 in March) son can ride my wife's XS Cannondale 26er and my daughters XS Ghost 650b but on both of them he looks way too small and the bars are a real stretch.

There are plenty of good 24" wheeled bikes around now so surely it is better to get a bike that is the right size and in the right proportions to the rider.

A 24" Crest rim with with some light tubeless tyres shed over 2lb from my son's bike and the 1x10 XT, imported short cranks from the USA etc..... It just keeps going but I suppose the main thing is to get them enjoying the riding!

"that Turner" has a pretty high saddle - presumably the rider was a reasonably tall kid

The bars on our frame started slightly higher than the saddle but still a very good fit (but I made that frame myself so very short head tube and slack head angle to avoid toe overlap). Still fitting well 20 months later with a slightly longer stem and seatpost.

The problem with production frames is generally head tube length and fork length. Also running short stems (to correct the reach) means you can't get much drop via the stem. If you are ambitious then forks can be spaced down internally and head tubes can be trimmed and faced.....

My experience with Inbreds is they work OK but a smidge long and rather heavy.

Spending money on light 26" wheels is a good investment as they can move onto the next frame.

According to the size sticker, this is the smallest frame. In fact it is the longest and tallest and lightest. It flies.

My 10 yr old got a small On One Whippet built up from bits I had lying around. The carbon frame is a bonus for her as it makes it nice and light versus a steel job like my others. She is 11 now and 5ft2 and it's about perfect for her.

Built a few up for our girls over the years as they have been growing up. Stuck with air forks and shocks as they are easily tuned for light weights.

My 11yr old lad (he was 10yrs in the pic) on a XS Curtis Super X we built up together. The frame was from eBay, the back wheel was an Alfine 8 I had hanging round (less controls to worry about) and the rest was mostly from spare parts

It's a bit heavy but he can still climb like a mountain goat. Upgrades will probably be 1x10 and suspension forks as his skills progress but but he loves it for now

The brake cables have since been shortened...

My son is on a second hand Octane Zircus with a 100mm Reba. He was 11 when I put it together and he's had it for a year. It's a jump bike, so very low seat height and pretty short reach and reasonable weight.

I got my son a 2nd hand 13.5" XS Rockhopper when he was 11... the basic build was pretty good (mostly Deore, with Dart 3s), but it needed a short stem and flat bars to get the front low enough, and the usual better pedals. Pretty soon we swapped the Darts for some Rebas which are worlds better and hopefully will make the next bike. He's also now got XT shifters as the action is lighter and easier.

Now that he's nearly 14 I'll be looking for a new frame.

Our 11 year old is just out growing his XS Inbred so I'm going to move all the stuff over to a small 456. Frame, forks and wheels secondhand from a friend. Went for new XT brakes and drivetrain for short cranks and reach adjust on the brake levers. Started off standard 1 by 10 but I landed up fitting a 42T expander. Also for a bit of fit and forget. If the mtb bug hadn't bit I'd of had it 😀

12 yr old MCJnr just moved onto a 16" Inbred.

He is nearly as tall as me mind.

How does that compare to the frame sizes you guys are using ?

I was thinking originally of a 14 inbred.

14" Inbred would just about fit - they are a bit long, but a short stem and an inline post should be OK.

Seems to be crank length that is problem with younger ones

My son is 4'11" and riding a 14" Inbred in the picture. The saddle is a lot lower than usual (for obvious reasons). Tried him today on my 16" 456... fitted fine. It's a bit on the small side for me at 5' 7" so I'd say if your nephew if 5'2" then 16" would be better than 14".

Yes 14" Inbred vs 16" 456.

The 16" 456 had enough standover for him and that was with a 140mm fork... I'd move his 120mm on to it. Length was ok but touch long with and 80mm stem, again I'd move the 50mm over from the Inbred.

TBH I wasn't expecting the 456 to fit... really just tried it out to get an idea on how long it would be before it was OK for him. Looking at him in the picture (not normally a view I get) I'd say the frame (Inbred) was look a bit short....

I did think about going down the route of a small 26 frame when I was replacing Lewis's blast but wanted to get him an FS bike and there isn't anything out there for his size so went for a Transition Ripcord. 100mm reverb, 1x10 with 40t expander, crest rims, haven bar and stem, slx brakes, SID RCT3.

I've just picked up a 13.5" hardrock frame for my 10 year old - have a 1 x 9 groupset and most bits. Need wheels, brakes and forks (which I have my eye on) and we're good to go!

Ok am officially looking for something now, frame or full build if anyone has something kicking about that they think would fit the bill please let me know.

Loving these bikes. My 6 yr old son isn't ready for a 26" frame so I'm building up a Genesis 24" wheel for him for this summers trip to the Alps and we're both desperately hoping he'll grow enough to ride it (which is a very good way to get him to eat vegetables and go to bed early, as "we only grow when we're asleep").

Last summer he rode his Islabikes Beinn 20 at Val D'Isere and Tignes and, apart from savage arm pump, was ok on the green singletracks... but bigger wheels, disc brakes and larger volume tyres will really help. I picked up the Genesis to build it up with lighter components and it's a work in progress (and have a 24" Spec Hotrock FSR frame for sale if anyone's interested?).

I've done a lot of riding and been lucky enough to ride all over the world. There is still no trail, no ride that's been as fun as riding behind him down a dusty singletrack.

@hughjayteens - what length are the Sram cranks? Could you email photos to me (address is profile).

@i_like_food I have decided to use them now - they're SRAM XCT JR 152mm - only about £15 from a French MTB site. Triple rings but I'll just fit a single NW. Had decided to just buy another Islabike but managed to get hold of a 13" Rockhopper frame on ebay so building that up now. May end up as the only kids bike with 20mm axle and a pair of Rockshox Arygle Airs but that's what I have so I'll give them a try!

I think I'm looking to sell my 16 inch Santa Cruz Chameleon (26 inch wheels, horizontal dropouts, etc.) if anyone is interested in a rolling chassis - frame + FSA headset, Hope Hoops (DT 4.2 rims) with tyres and X-Fusion forks.

I was going to keep it for my eldest, but he's at least 5 years away from being big enough, so it seems silly to keep it that long.

Since these photos were taken it's now got a longer seat post and different saddle and I might change it from 3 x 9 to a 1 x 9 transmission before we use it again.

I managed to pick up a Transition Ripchord 24 in the sales at the end of 2015 so I'm currently buying up a few bits to lighten that up e.g. tyres, and I've loads of spares like lighter rotors, bars, stem, pedals ready to be fitted.
