It's only bl**dy Idles. Why hasn't he mentioned them before? He plays so much diverse music; why doesn't he just devote his whole show to Sleeper, Idles, and obscure British indie 1987-1993?

Seriously, BBC 6Music has got to a point where it's only Keaveny keeping it listenable. Mary Ann Hobbes ("'godawful noise' is the name of that tune") is appalling, Lamacq is the most boring man on radio (TM) and Craig Charles is back on weekends.

There’s always Spotify, you know. They don’t pay artists anything worth a damn, but at least you won’t have a need to come on here whining about the presenters.

They seem to have resurrected Liz Kershaw for a whole single hour on Saturdays too - had been enjoying her absence.

Yes, I hope my BBC licence fee wasn't used to pay him over all those months he was off.

Idles?? well he'd know, the idle bastard, he's been trotting out the hospital radio standard shite for 20 years, you'd have thought with his time off he'd have at least had the imagination think of a few new features or find some better beds.

I like Steve Lamacq, I love Craig Charles and Keaveny for that matter. Dont listen to MAH to have a view either way.

Other opinions & music tastes are available. Just be glad you're not locked in to R2 at work like some who are tortured everyday by Steve Wright and Sara Cox.

I'm very disappointed that Craig Charles got bumped back to the weekend slot. I really enjoyed his drive time show, tended to listen to it riding Zwift.

Lurpak just doesn't hit the mark, whilst I like the music genre it's put together with all the enthusiasm of a council planner. He was tedious on R1 when I was a yoof and he's not got any better with age.

Oh my god.
Fontaine dc and pigs pigs pigs.. What is their fascination with them!!

Craig Charles was the best show on the station

Yup, Fontaines, pigs, Idles, that woman who does all the whirly, whirly chaotic music. All get in the sea.

Craig Charles was good in the afternoon. Loved the trunk of punk.

MAH really does play some incredibly up it's own bum music. If she says 'I see you' literally one more time though!... 😡

Even Lauren. The amount of wet blankets read out on her show, 'I'm just sitting here in tears listening to that...' No you're effing not, clearly you're sitting there tweeting a radio show! 😡

I like a bit of Hugh Stevens actually. Nice Welsh lilt. It's good when he's covering.

Really liking Tom Ravenscroft too.

Going off Keaveny a bit, mainly because when he's on with my non-radio six liking colleague in the workshop he makes me too self conscious that he's waffling on about shit.

Still, love Radio 6. There isn't anything as overall listenable imho.

We miss Craig Charles of a week night now. Little ginge was particularly fond of all the old school punk, and it was nice watching him dance while I made his dinner.

This! I can't stand Lamacq, MAH does my head in and hearing Liz Kershaw may result in radio exiting through window - but it's tough to find much else that's significantly better

I find it almost impossible to listen to the Craig C Funk and Soul show but his covering of the afternoon was great. If Tom Ravenscroft, Gid Coe, Mark and Stuart could cover the rest with the odd smattering of Cerys, Guy Garvey and Huw Stephens that would be fine thanks.

Every show, every bloody day... unoriginal, dull shite been done 10 times better in every previous decade...plus about 3 other soundalike bands "OOh that's the same producer as Fontaines Dc" Well **** me, I never could've guessed!
YFH, I've needed the radio a bit to get me going, but I'm back to MP3s after hearing that shite over and over. (along with "ooh what haircuts you having during lockdown?" "what you been out shopping for today?" hahaha! brilliant dunno how they think of this stuff!)
I did discover 1 song I liked and hadn't heard of! In 2 months.. 1 song! 😂

Guy Garvey

I reckon he does his show staring at himself in the mirror, loves the sound of his own voice & thinks he's done everything and has met & is mates with everyone.

Apart from that & his taste in music he's fine especially when I leave the radio for the cat and I've gone out

True. I work with a yoot now and again and I let him put radio 1 on.

It's weird, but so much of the music on there sounds more middle of the road and middle aged than anything I listen to, and I'm middle aged, he's 20 😅

It's all either maximum emosh emphasis whining, or dreadful footballer R&B with that autotune vocal robot effect. Terrible..

Still, it's a bit more understandable why some folks listen to that than commercial radio.. I....just....don't......understand. 🤔

There are some presenters on 6Music that I don’t like but I’m not sure why I’d write about it on the internet.

This thread has made me smile.

I whinge about 6M but love it at the same time. And every time I listen to something else (especially R1) I love 6M a little bit more.

That said, Hairy Man Hobbs can do one. And was Guy Garvey in a band at some point? I don’t think he’s ever mentioned it.

And bloody Fontaines DC and Pigs x7, as above.

But, Crisps on the Radio, Cerys, Craig Charles, etc etc etc. Can easily find things that are worth the licence fee on their own.

I think we all just love to hate the best thing on the radio by far.

Marc Riley has upped the game in lockdown. I know his last half hour is a repeat every night, but, it is a good repeat. He is the one reason for paying the licence fee.
Along with Gid of course, who loves a bit of rock and roll/rackabilly.

I've grown to quite enjoy MAH, although I get mildly irritated/amused every time she says a track has been "lifted" from an album. That and her awkward laugh when interviewing. I enjoy the variety of music though.

Lamacq just gets turned off, for the reasons mentioned above.

Thank goodness for BBC Sounds - currently going through Don Letts' shows.

When all the dissenting voice has to say is that they're not going to slag something and in saying that they are just slagging what someone else is saying... Well, surely you get it now?!

Lavern is allowed coz I've fancied her since yoof. Idles are brilliant. Welsh lady can Gits coz the tone of her voice is hard to bear. Lurpak is too dull. Robinson should be on daily.

Lamacq is so dull, if i'm driving i turn over immediately. At home i rarely listen to radio 6 anymore apart from at the weekends with Huey, Giles etc.

On the subject of Giles his own radio station Worldwide FM is great (although some of the shows are specific to genres that don't float my boat). Proper music lovers from all over the world playing the music that gets them going. I rarely hear much I've not heard before.

Is MAH the one who sounds like Kevin the Teenager? If so, that voice is fantastically annoying in a smash the radio kind of way. I'm sure she's a lovely person, but if she could stop speaking the show would be much better.

Not really relevant, but only thing that has kept me sane the last 3 months is going for bike rides and simultaneously screaming along to Idles at the top of my voice.

“The only way too scare a Tory is to read and get rich”

“This snowflake’s an avalanche”

“Did you see the selfie what Francis Bacon did?
Looks nothing like him, the f***ing div”

“A heathen from Eton
On a bag of Michael Keaton
A heathen from Eton
On a bag of Michael Keaton
He thinks he's suave
You're not suave 'cause you watched Get Carter
You are a catalogue, plastic Sinatra
A tryhard, you should've tried harder
Me, oh me, oh my, Roy
You look like a walking thyroid
You're not a man, you're a gland
You're one big neck with sausage hands
You are a Topshop tyrant
Even your haircut's violent
You look like you're from Love Island
You stood and the room went silent

Never fight a man with a perm”

Etc.

As I've been working from home lately so 6Music has been on constantly. S'aright. If I get sick of it I can put other music on - Peat & Diesel at the moment. Like was said further up there are other choices available.

I put up with the DJs waffling on because my other half likes commercial radio - less DJ drivel but loads more ads. And I'd rather not hear the ads!

Great: Gilles Peterson; Tom Raverscroft; Iggy Pop (when he was on); Cillan Murphy (re-runs replacing Iggy); Nemone's electric ladyland; Cerys (actually superb); Gid Coe

OK: Craig Charles (ultimately a limited selection, daily was too much); that dude that comes on in the morning first thing; Lauren Laverne (a bit hit and miss); MAH (sometimes brilliant, i do like her too); Marc Riley, Stuart Maconie's Freakzone (sometimes!)

Awful: Lamacq, Liz Kershaw, Radmac talking about crips on a Saturday morning.

What about alternatives? I've been enjoying the following as online streaming services:

- Worldwide FM - massive selection of shows on Gilles Peterson's online radio show
(currently listening to "Global Roots Radio, a weekly dose of experimental, underground music from across all corners of the globe; with independent music and culture at the core.")

- Loads of random dance stuff on Soundcloud like BIS radio, Moxie, Bill Brewster, Subclub, Ninjatune, etc to infinity

- Rinse FM - including wonderful Andy Weatherall back catalogue

- Various ravey streaming things like United We Stream and the Carl Cox facebook channel.

Friend and i were having this conversation a few days ago..

Do you reckon Liz Kershaw knows about the skeletons in some radio bosses cupboard, how is she still allowed a show?

I like some of the music but Mary Ann Hobbs always sounds like she took too much acid in the 60s and hasn't come down yet "i am going to play you an aural landscape" no your playing a record!!

Did enjoy Craig Charles in week too, but best thing has been Sounds app and downloading the shows from 6Music and occasional radio1 show onto app and listening as and went i like instead of live.

What I don't get is people moaning about Lamaq always playing indie/britpop type stuff.

That's his thing. Just like Giles Peterson does "world music," Craig Charles does funk n soul, nemone does electronic, Laverne does twee, MAH does aural soundscapes that will make you cry, keaveney does the pixies, Huey does steely dan etc.

Try listening to Heart FM or capital for a day, you'll soon stop moaning.

Fontaines DC can bore off and all

They were on the Jools Holland thing a week or two ago.

They are the sons of the Sawdoctors who decided to form a heavy band but can’t quite get rid of the Sawdoctors’ sound, aren’t they?

(I may have made that up, but they really did make me think of Sawdoctors. I useta love them! I useta love them once, long long time ago. 😂 )

I like the Fontaines DC album, but live they were dull, the lead singer, the lead singer is a bit like Ian Curtis in that he nervously jerks on stage and says nothing at all, and they just played the songs exactly how they appear on album and no crowd interaction at all, but they may have just been a tuesday night in Norwich!

Cerys get on my nerves because she makes out that she's an expert but she's really not, she talks complete guff. The others don't mind but I agree that Lurpack needs to be replaced permanently with Craig Charles, his afternoon was great (much better than the Funk n soul show which has run out of steam, too many bands on there sound like impersonation of funk played by sixth formers) 🙂

There was something published 10 or so years ago about sexual abuse (during the Jimmy Saville allegations/truths), and iirc, LK was just starting her show, allegedly, DLT came in, and put his hand up her top while she was on air. There were other allegations too. DLT was found guilty for other abuses.

Listen again is excellent - I'm currently listening to Cery's Blues Show from R2 Monday night. And once you've started looking, there's Huey's Saturday show, Cery's Sunday show, Don Letts etc etc.

Radio 2 is good in the evenings and Saturdays, but during the day it's a bit too much Rihanna-wannabes, Euro-disco-pop and the like.

Oh, and Idles are not bad - Danny Nedelko is one of the best tracks of last year. But honestly, can Lamacq not go half an hour without talking about them/ having them on his show/ banging on about it? I wouldn't mind the indie schtick if he had any more variation than Sleeper/ Idles/ Fontaines DC, or if he had any chat whatsoever. Weird that he still has a show

How do you know, what makes you the expert that you say she isn’t? How many albums and hit singles have you had with a band and solo? How long did you live and work in Nashville?
Show us your music industry credentials, I dare you.

its Cillian Murphy that makes me turn over immediately. Cant stand his insipid monotone ramblings about 'beautiful soundscapes'. Hughey Morgan....similar tool. Always remember him on never mind the buzzcocks having a paddy and walking off. classic awkward TV.
I quite like Lammac….but he does defiantly push the same few bands over and over. I guess they must have some sort of playlist of songs that they push as a station that get played every day for a couple of weeks at a time.

Wasn't he and few of the other DJs (nemone?) all working as NME / Melody Maker journos in the 80s and 90s?

Also, Cerys.....she can (as someone else said) get in the sea.

....and Fontianes DC. Gotta disagree with lots of you. Their album Dogrel is brilliant. probably lots of other stuff that has come after sounds like them because they are good and a fairly unique sound.
