£100k for a house? What a rip off.
Like it or not, we live in an increasingly unequal society. But it's only an Audi...back when I were a lad, a car that cost as much as a house would be something like a Lamborghini or a Ferrari or an Aston Martin saloon, not a tarted up wrister-wagon.
What would you do with a house in Lancashire?
Holiday home?
The perfect ultimate car in my book but that is merely my opinion, other opinions are equally valid 😀

In 1990 you could buy a 2 bedroom terraced house in the NE for £20k. Plenty of cars cost more than that.
We bought a motorhome recently.
It's 10 years old and cost about 50% of what we paid for our first house in 1996.
It's 5% of what that same house is worth now.
Not sure if I think the price of motorhomes has become more reasonable or the price of houses has increased out of all proportion - probably the latter!
Compare that car to what a house *should* cost and it looks a lot more expensive...

With inflation at 2.9% since 1990 (Source: BOE) you still can.
That said the work car park in Middlesbrough was full of M-sport BMW's, Audi's, even the apprentice had an Astra VXR. The car park in Reading was mostly 8yr old Mondeo's and Focus. So obviously what wasn't spent on the mortgage was spent on other stuff (see also; private schools).

The person who bought it is negotiating with the bloke who owns the garden behind it for a similar sum so he can then build a house it.

As a weekend holiday destination maybe or to retire to (though it looks like somewhere that has a lot of rain and cold winters) but not to live.
If the property is cheap then it's obviously because the area is blighted by unemployment or a low wage economy, that said a car is rapidly depreciating asset and while property can go down the long term trend is generally up.
I don't like many cars, but I'd love to be able to sling my muddy bike in the back of one of those. Obviously £100K is only to those stupid/rich enough to buy new. Lottery win? straight down the Audi dealer.

The rest may be true, but it's actually one of the driest parts of the country because it's out of the prevailing wind, ditto temperature, usually a couple of degree's warmer than the west coast.
Unemployment is a problem, but a lot of it is a result of the collapse of the steelworks and the slow demise of ICI leaving large numbers off work and unskilled for other work, and a cascade effect form that is a lack of opportunities and motivation in some suburbs where kids grow up in families where no ones had a career since they were born. Conversely more 'middle class' professions are the same as anywhere else in the country, with the benefit of having more disposable income through not having a huge mortgage, and a national park on your doorstep (and 5 withing 90 minutes).

Ah it's a daft amount, they're funny things - I have mate with the 'old' RS6 estate, he LOVES it, in fact I knew a lot of people who went in for these mega power cars - I think there's an element of 'compensation' going on.
Yeah they're "as fast as a super car from 20 years ago" - if you think super cars are about speed, you've never met anyone who owns one - I have, lots of them, I used sell finance to people to buy them.
They're all different (owners), but as a rule of thumb most buy them because they've always wanted one, and it's fair to say, quiet a few are a little disappointed to have 'met their hero' because in the real world, with traffic and speed bumps and limits there's very little that a Ferrari can do that a Fiesta can't, but there's quite a bit a Fiesta can do, that a Ferrari can't, be a 'car' for one - because a Ferrari isn't really a car in the traditional sense.
Most spend their time mooching about at 8mph looking all fancy, and making growlly noises. A Ferrari can do that, a blingly Audi Estate, nah it's just another Audi estate only with fancy wheels in the posing stakes.
For the few who actually try to use the speed, stick that Audi on a track and it's on-paper performance will count for about sod all, someone with £20ks worth of Caterham or Atom will come along and make it look boring, so will that 20 year old Super Car, but really no one will. I'm sure some will think it will cross Continents with ease - yeah probably, but the 2 litre diesel will too, and won't need to stop every 200 miles to refuel and without 'racing seats' massive wheels and overly firm suspension it'll be a lot easier on the driver. If you wanted to have one of those Top Gear style races and take the piss with the speed limits - the 3.0 diesel would destroy it on range alone.
When it boils down to it, someone who really wants to 'drive' would have something else, someone who really wants to cover great distances quickly would have something else - no this is the logical conclusion to more-is-more. It's the "get out of my way" in the rear view mirror car of choice, or the "I've got more than you" choice, that's the 2016 version of the medieval man walking around carrying a huge sword that is too long to swing in town and too heavy to last the length of battle out of it. it's power is entirely hypothetical.

Looking at moving back North, I work from home and overseas, so in theory I can live anywhere.
The problem I have found is that the "really nice" parts of the North East, are not much cheaper than a lot of the South East. It's only about 20% cheaper up North. There used to be a much larger difference.
I really like Lancashire, and the people up there, but RS6 every time!

It is an odd place, around Skelton and the northern boundary of the NYM in general terraced houses are £35-£55k, as much depending on condition as location. It then goes up failry steadily through nicer villages and 3 and 4 bed houses to £200-250k. Then it just goes exponential. Often you look and there's nothing £250-£400k, but then there's £750-£1million, £2million houses. It's reflective of the socioeconomic makeup of the area, the terraced houses are the low wages and unemployed, the middle band are for the middle class, and then there's a band of houses for the managers and footballers. There isn't the same spectrum of house prices you get elsewhere as you're either earning decent money, or you're not.
But you have to compare like with like. Yes a nice middle-class house might be £430k in Reading and in Guisborough, but:

Yep. all subjective. I can't understand how the reviewer gave it a 9/10 for 'cool' but if he thinks it is who am I to argue. I think its about as cool as my Ford Grand Tourneo - ie not in the slightest.

How much? Mind bendingly expensive init 8O. £60k is even mentaller.
Some plots came up a couple of km from us, varied from £2800-8000 depending on what was done to it. Cleared of trees, leveled, services (electric and fibre) and so on.
All between 2000 and 3000sqm.
Unfortunately you'd not be able to put 10 double garages on it.
Limited to 150sqm footprint of house and 50sqm of outbuildings.
And this is all less than 10 minutes from the motorway and under an hour to the centre of Göteborg, in the rush hour.
All the plots have sold (14 of them IIRC) and only one has got a house on it so far. The rest appear to be going up as self builds, one plank at a time. Thats taken about 5 years.........
Go another 10km away from the motorway it's probably not even worth selling the land, as they can make more out of selling the wood.
Wonder if you get working indicators for your hundred grand.....

Chap who lives near me has just bought one and its flippin lovely. With the optional Ceramic brakes I think it was a fair bit over the 100k, but it sounds mega. He does have a rubbish bike though....
I've got an M6 (the older V10 version), when it works its (in my opinion) the bee's doo-dahs. However, it doesn't work very often and costs a fortune to fix. It also doesn't have the ability to carry a bike (no folding rear seats and carbon roof means no roof rack). It also does 9mpg on a good day, less if you give it some hammer. All of which is why I also have a derv Golf, which is rubbish and breaks more than the BMW....
You can buy a house in Lancashire for under 10 grand, so it's not saying much...
Fella up from me has a 6 and a 3. Gorgeous machines but utterly nuts to run. I had one for 2 weeks while my rs4 was being repaired and while beautiful and fast it was heavy, didn't handle that well and drank like a very dry man in the desert reaching an oasis, BP got to know me well. I'd have one though ! Previous model you have to take engine out to replace plugs FFs !

Funny, I thought P-Jay couldn't have been further from the truth of the matter. People buy RS6's and RS4's because they look like normal cars and don't want to be judged driving Ferraris etc. Its below the radar supercar performance.
