Potatoes can just do one...! yeah, chips etc..but mash is rubbish. Roasties are just a bit 'meh', and gnocchi..who's got time for gnocchi...??

I like bread, but not massively into it...

For me it would be a tight tie up between rice and pasta....

However, I think in teh end, PASTA would win.. soo yummy on its own or with a sauce..
Bolognese..lasagne... mmm

DrP

(Now, a big spanner in teh works is PIZZA.... does that count?)

I used to think potatoes were boring until I stopped eating them. Mash is amazing, but a really good baked spud is incredible. Same for bread.

Rice and pasta are what I could do without.

You think that rice and pasta are better carbs than bread or chips? Are you out of your mind? If thats the case, then how do you explain this? Eh?

Exhibit A, your honour... the ultimate in carbs...

So it has to be one of the above. I'm favouring the chips

Rice.

Carries curry
Carries chill
Carries fried rice
Sushi

Or just a bit of soy.

Pasta is the first against the wall.

Mash is amazing, but a really good baked spud is incredible.

have you ever tried mash made with baked pototoes?

Roasties are just a bit ‘meh’,

they can be amazing if you make them amazing. A plate of boiled rice or plain pasta would be meh. Potatoes roasted in lemon juice and ton of oregano steaming and sticky straight out of the oven is amazeballs.

I think you have to craft rice and pasta into being nice - they’re just an armature to hang other flavours off. But pototoes only need the right nudge to be delicious in their own right

having said that.... I mostly eat pasta

Toss up between potatoes and bread.
A good loaf is a thing of beauty, but I think potatoes edge it.
And anyone who things mash is rubbish needs to serious look at their cooking skills. Mash done well is one of the true wonders of the food world.

Rice.

Carries curry
Carries chill

Chili is nice on its own, with a few more beans. Available in the US a bit runnier as chili soup.

Curry can be eaten with chickpeas or other pulses in it and still be good.

So rice can be done without.

Hmmmmm. Initially I thought pasta, but as a foodstuff on its own it's a bit of a one trick pony.

I think my vote would go to the potato...so many cooking options compared to pasta or rice.

Potatoes for me. Life without fish & chips would be dismal.

I could quite easily give up pasta.

Potatoes for sure, and if you think gnocchi is rubbish then try roasting them with sausages

Bread. Naan for curries, seeded bap for cheese, focaccia. Can fry to go with your brekkie.
Can still make a pizza.

Rice, meh. Pasta, meh. I eat both today, but neither are taste explosions like you can get with bread.

Spuds close run second place - for chips and roasties.

Toss up between potatoes and bread.

Bit Niche...

Although I probably eat more bread based foods (too many), and more rice, I think if I could only have one type of carb for ever more it would probably be pasta, I just prefer it...

Slightly off topic if you were only allowed ONE food item to eat forever but the correct answer should be potato as it is one of the few foods that provides almost everything you need to survive. meat, rice, corn etc only provide some of what you need.

I learnt this during a Diversity Training course explaining why diversity in the team is often more important that getting the exact right person.

If you are put on a desert island with only one food source you should choose potato as it is definitely the best for the job.
If you are then allowed a second choice some logic might say choose potato again because it is still the best for the job. Maybe a different variety of potato.
Same for third, fourth and fifth choice.

Makes sense to choose different food stuffs. Same when building your team.

Bread. Decent sourdough or just quality, crusty loaf.

Those who are not sure about mash are doing it wrong. You need x1 part butter for x2 part spuds.

Potatoes. Mash, roasties, chips, baker, crisps, rosti, dauphinoise, Hasselbank. Nom.

Next question: you can eat only one animal ever again, what is it?
For me, pig. Pork chops, ribs, belly, sausage, bacon, pork mince, black pudding, brawn...

Although I suspect after a while I might go veggy at the dissonance between cute piggy and tasty food on my plate.

I can only assume the OP can't make decent mash or roasties?

Toss up between pots and pasta for me although I'd really miss rice and bread. Spuds probably in the end FTW because crisps.

Potatoes - I LOVE them.

I was having a conversation once which went something like this ...

Other Person: What sort of food do you eat when you're unwell?
Me: Oh well, I can normally manage something (can't remember what I said) on toast.
Other Person: Mashed potatoes on toast?! I've never tried that. How charming and unusual.
Me: (thinks) Me neither! ... (out loud, while tying laces on running shoes) I do hope you'll excuse me, I've just remembered an important appointment elsewhere ... 😉

Definitely bread.

But, being coeliac, pretty much all my bread and pasta is made out of rice flour so, maybe rice after all and just that some of it gets turned into bread.

Doctor: "Why do you subsist entirely on a diet of nothing but potatoes?"

Me: " A Doctor on the Internet said I should"

Doctor: " It's making you ill. Are you sure he was a real Doctor? "

Me: " Oh yes. He has a nice beard and wears natty waistcoats and everything"

Tried cauliflower 'rice'? very good if you want a substitute to go with chilli, curry, etc.
