My dad has been researching the family history. Speaking to him about my grandad’s service during WW2 and he mentioned that the first part of his service record has been blacked out. It seems a bit odd does anyone know why that would happen?
My dad's regiment (Queen's Own 4th Hussars) have some diary entries available online. Try Googling for your grandad's regiment to see what they were up to at that time.
Thanks. The trouble is, it’s the name and details of the first regiment that have been blacked out.
We know after that he was with the Pioneer Corp and are planning to look at the war diary to see where he went etc.
Normally blacked out if an individual on the record is still alive, however this is unusual even going back a few years.
The official secrets act still covers quite a bit of WW2 but again i doubt the Pioneers would have been up to much clandestine work.
The other possibility is some sort of personal issue (conscientious objector or some form of serious discipline issue) often soldiers with "previous" were given a choice of the glasshouse or Pioneer duties.
The other very left field one was individuals who served with the Black and Tans prior to WW2 had their records "blacked out" this was unusual but i have a friend who discovered last year his grandfather served with the Black and Tans and never mentioned it to any of the family.
