Yes, we've done our maths homework, yes we've read all our allocated books - and more.
Yes, I totally didn't realise she needed to learn a poem this holidays.
So. Does anyone know a good poem suitable for a five year old to recite at a school poetry day? She'd like it to be about horses (or alicorns, or unicorns).
I'm thinking up to 12 lines, looks like it'd be easy to learn (!), preferably by a known poet rather than an internet poet, that kind of thing?
Here's an unsuitable one to get things going!
The Great Australian Adjective by William Thomas Goodge
The sunburnt *** stockman stood
And, in a dismal mood,
Apostrophized his cuddy;
"The * nag's no good,
He couldn't earn his food -
A regular brumby,
*!"
He jumped across the *** horse
And cantered off, of course!
The roads were bad and muddy;
Said he, "Well, spare me days
The Government's ways
Are screamin' funny,
*!"
He rode up hill, down *** dale,
The wind it blew a gale,
The creek was high and floody.
Said he, "The horse must swim,
The same for me and him,
Is something sickenin',
*!"
He plunged into the *** creek,
The * horse was weak,
The stockman's face a study!
And though the * horse was drowned
The rider reached the ground
Ejaculating, "*!"
"****!"
My lovely lovely lovely horse.
My lovely horse (my lovely horse), Running through the field (running through the field).
Where are you going, With your fetlocks blowing In the wind?
I want to shower you with sugarlumps. And ride you over fences. Polish your hooves every single day. And bring you to the horse dentist.
My lovely lovely lovely horse.
My lovely horse (my lovely horse), You’re a pony no more (you’re a pony no more). Running around, with a man on your back, like a train in the night...
Like a train in the night. (saxophone solo)
Well, given the lack of competition, it's certainly a contender...
doubley post
Bit long, but there's some repetition and it will be quite funny if reaad in a serious poetic style.
The Campptown ladies sing this song,
Doo-da, Doo-da
The Camptown racetrack's five miles long
Oh, de doo-da dayGoin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a bob-tailed nag
Somebody bet on the grayOh, the long tailed filly and the big black horse,
Doo-da, doo-da
Come to a mud hole and they all cut across,
Oh, de doo-da dayGoin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a bob-tailed nag
Somebody bet on the grayI went down there with my hat caved in,
Doo-da, doo-da
I came back home with a pocket full of tin
Oh, de doo-da dayGoin' to run all night
Goin' to run all day
I bet my money on a bob-tailed nag
Somebody bet on the gray

My little pony,
Skinny and bony,
Down in the stable,
Drinking Carling Black Label.
Ride a cock horse to Banbury cross? Chances are she already knows some or all of it (all about the short cuts here).
1. I haven't got a clue what that Aussie stuff is supposed to be.
2. What's an alicorn?
Horsey, Horsey
Farmer Grey's got a one horse shay
He takes to town on market day
Coming home when the lights are low
He sings this song as away they go.
Horsey, Horsey don't you stop
Just let your feet go clipity clop
Your tail goes swish and the wheels go round
Giddy up we're homeward bound.
Horsey horsey on your way
We've done the journey many a day
Your tail goes swish and the wheels go round
Giddy up we're homeward bound.
We ain't in a hustle, we ain't in a bustle
Don't go tearing up the road
We ain't in a hurry, we ain't in a flurry
And we ain't got a very heavy load
Going home when they get half way
They call a halt at the Load of Hay
He has just one, then he has one more
And you'll hear him sing after three or four
You don't need the whip no goodness knows
You don't need the whip so I'll take a little doze
Horsey horsey on your way
We've done the journey many a day
your tail goes swish and the wheels go round
Giddy up we're homeward bound.
There once was a very famous man
On his famous horse he'd ride through the land
The people used to see him everywhere
When he died they put a statue in the square
Hooray -
Here comes the equestrian statue prancing up and down the square
Little old ladies stop and stare saying - "Well I declare"
Once a month on a Friday there's man
With a mop and bucket in his hand
For him it's just another working day
So he whistles as he rubs and scrubs away
Hooray -
Here comes the equestrian statue prancing up and down the square
Little old ladies stop and stare saying - "Well I declare"
It's a sight to bring you joy you feel so gay
And it's guaranteed to brighten up your day, if it's grey

Wind Horse - Trisha Sugarek
running free, wild, brave
tail streaming high in the wind
hoof pounding the earth
horses turn their haunch
to show their scorn for the storm
and nature’s tantrum
allows man to think
he can command elegance
and tame the wild heart
I can't remember all of it, but there's one about horses being the best of all the animals, isn't there?
+1 fruitbat and "Equestrian Statue"
Kids need more Bonzos in their life.
Oh OK, proper answer, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
tHANKS ALL... DRUNKEN, POST DINNER WITH FEIENDS (IS THAT ADNNER PARTY?) Thanks, but thanks all the same. will look at tomorrow!
Wun-Wun was a racehorse,
Tu-Tu was one too,
Wun-Wun won one race,
and Tu-Tu won one too.
😀
How old is the kid?
Horse
Edward Lear
There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who sat on a Horse when he reared;
But they said, "Never mind! you will fall off behind,
You propitious Old Man with a beard!"
There was an Old Man of Nepaul,
From his horse had a terrible fall;
But, though split quite in two, with some very strong glue
They mended that man of Nepaul.
Shermer - Think it says 5 year old in title!
5 year olds get homework?!
rickmeister's suggestion is best.
Awesome, thanks everyone.
We've gone for an abridged Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening...
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
As for homework, I guess that's what it is. It's for Year 1, and they send home work sheets or spelling words every week.
Shermer - Think it says 5 year old in title!
This is a very good point
Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
My horse is dead
And now it's glue!!!!
I WIN! WOOHOO!
Bejesus a 5yr old has to do all THAT?
from year 1 kids are now expected to do spellings, maths and reading homework, in minivaders school its suggested that you do this for up to half an hour every night (FFS). personally i think its crap. so minivader does his spellings (they get tested every week) and reads a book as soon as we get in from school then its on to kids stuff. it takes between 10 and 15 minutes but thats not the point. i also dont expect him to do any school work over the wekends or holidays... they are for playing!
