Not sure whether or not to replace the battery.but I recharge it every night, probably make ten minutes of phone calls, and maybe half hour a day web browsing, and that uses up the battery pretty much, is that normal or would I benefit from a new battery?

YOu can test how worn the battery is with this...

From memory, the battery life was never great and subsequent iOS updates worsen it. Might be worth disabling all unnecessary notifications etc

I have a 4S on latest iOS (bought second hand off here in fact so actually not 100% on how old) and my battery lasts most of the day (sometimes need a little top up mid-evening if desperate) which will doubtless have included a good 2+ hours of web/twodots/texts/FB nonsense over wifi mainly. Think how long it would last if I didn't waste my time with that rubbish! 🙂

In short, no, doesn't sound normal compared to my experience...

Just replace the battery, there's loads of sellers of them on Ebay and the swap is straight forwards enough if a bit fiddly.

I just replaced the battery on my g/f's 4S, and it's life is no better than the old battery. I reported it to the seller, and his reply was that the issue was down to running the latest iOS not his battery...

I wasn't aware of HH's link above, but wish I'd tried it before replacing her battery (admittedly only cheap and easy to do)

Wysiwyg of this parish will probably confirm that batteries from ebay can be a bit variable, but the original battery has to be getting near its end anyway, two years is, I think, the general life-span.
I keep meaning to get the battery and home button replaced on my iP4; I'll remember to do it one day.

OP that's not too bad. I repaced the battery in my 4S it's not too difficult with battery and kit bought on Amazon for £8 I recall. The sellers above blaming the iOS are just making excuses for not giving a refund. The replacemnet batteries are very variable in quality even from same sellers / manufacturers. As far as I know you cannot get the genuine item from anywhere except Apple

Just had a battery in my 5 on the high street from one of the Asian phone repair places. Definitely better than it was, but probably not as good as it was when it was box fresh.

The thing about those batteries you buy off amazon, ebay etc. is that they are not original and many of them are crap

I know it's expensive getting a new battery put in by Apple but I'm going to do it. I'm at the end of my 2yr contract with my 5 and it still works brilliantly but the battery has had it. I can go to sim only contract which will save me £25 a month so £60 will be saved very quickly. The resale value will be better too if I decide to go for a 6 later on as I've had it changed by Apple. And I know I'll get a proper battery and no chance of me breaking my phone changing it. (I have previous for this despite generally being good at these things!)

What @rob says makes a lot of sesne. I would say for a 4S the resale benefit won't be so significant.

Replaced my 4S battery last month and get approx 2 days out of a charge, and that is including using strava for 70 mins a day.
Bought mine from iPhoneFixUK for £13.50 including delivery and tools. Quick and easy job (unlike the 3GS which is a complete disassemble).

I recently replaced the aging battery in my 4S with one off Amazon.

I went with this m-Digita kit for £12: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00B5EJRPE
which comes with little tools (handy because the screws/bolts are microscopic).

There are cheaper kits but the reviews are very mixed. The battery in this one had a cycle count of less than a hundred (compared to over a thousand in the one it replaced) and my 4S makes it through the day no bother now.

Follow the guide here, it isn't hard but is very fiddly:
