Salon are offering users a choice:

I think I'd rather have a 'P' but it's an interesting change of business model...

I'd rather stop using the internet

Given the resources STW uses, I thought it already was?

but seriously, I wouldn’t trust STW devs near a spreadsheet, let alone implementing something like a bitcoin miner.

Might speed the forum up a bit if my graphics processor was spun up to 100%

I used to read Salon, then they just seemed to get crapper and crapper, nothing but clickbait last time I looked. Don't miss it at all. No, they can't use my computer to mine bitcoins.

Once STW has grown up into a fully functioning forum . . . still not a chance!

I'd consider it, but that is more than just showing 'selected' ads to generate a revenue...I reckon I'd happily allow that if a percentage of bitcoins mined were paid to me i.e. 10% of all coins found using my machine.

Bitcoins are a cyber currency but from what appears in the news, it is doing very well (just now), so there wouldn't theoretically need to be that many coins mined...so may as well make it work for owner and site - it would encourage more people to take it up, more coins mined, etc.

I'm slightly concerned about the site and how it is going given some of the other posts that are on here just now - seems to be some serious dislike going on from those who use this forum daily...so I suspect if this was something to be offered, there would be very few taking it up - unsure what is going on, but something has definitely gone sour, so I suspect most people's reaction to this idea will be NO!

Get in the sea. I’d rather let the grannyjone’s ‘mechanic’ near my bike.

Actually, I bet it’s the same guy and he also does a bit of IT work on the side......

I don't understand how it would work. What if they mine Bitcoins (Whatever the frug that means) and don't make any actual money from doing so? Do people actually get real money from Bitcoins or do they just accrue value and change hands in the virtual world?

I did the sums when this was a fashionable idea a few months ago. A "average" publisher would get around about 100 times less revenue from running a coin miner as they get from showing adverts. Worse if you have a sspeciality audience.
