Been thinking about this and whilst unlikely to end up spending £6000 on an old car... the idea appeals massively.

Something like this for me.

Series 1 for me. If I still had mine, it'd be worth over £20,000 now, apart from the fact it would be knackered because I'd have not looked after it for the past 15 yrs

my first car. A B reg.
I want to get one for my boys for their first car. No ECU, easy mechanics, just a coil & condenser ignition. 1L, cheap to insure. And we can work on it at home.

A guy round the corner has an Escort Cosworth - he overheard me tell my lad that "That is what a proper car looks like" and we are quite pal-y now.

Think I'd have a 205 1.9GTi. Bloody mental. Less chavvy than an RS Escort, less fatal the a Renault 5 GT Turbo

Could never understand why folk fitted twin 40's on a 2 port head. I always got better power and road tractability from a HIF44 coupled to a standard metro plastic airbox. Dyno work was always done by Andy Preston at GVR racing

Soon as I saw the thread title I though of an old Escort!

Either that or a Lambo Countach 🙂

As a second car maybe, my first car was actually a Mk2 Golf GTi 16v, I was very lucky, and very poor because the insurance was nearly £200 a month.

It was fun to drive, but these days the roads are so busy, even at the weekend I'm not sure I'd get to drive it hard at all, it's one thing to act like a bit of a berk when you're on your own. Not to mention compared to modern cars, they're not very fast - a boggo standard hatch back will run rings around it.

As a car, well it broke down a bit, didn't like to start when it was very cold, the brakes were massively powerful, but without ABS and 15" wheels they would lock easily, the steering was a 2 man job at low speeds and it was very cold and misty in winter.

So yeah, I'd like one, but I'd sort of keep it in the garage and look at it, maybe go for a drive when all I had to do was go for a drive, it was a pain in the arse to drive 20 years ago it would be hell now.

My first car was a 1978 ford fiesta, two tone cream and dysentery brown. £150 lasted a couple of months.

2nd car was a 1982 Mini Mayfair in Brown £150 lasted a couple of months.

3rd car was a 1986 Fiat punto in undercoat blue. I spent money on this one! £650 and was actually good for a year or so.

4th car was a 1987 fiesta bought for £350 sold for £600. Only car i've ever made money on.

Would I buy a car of my youth? NO!

Are we talking poster cars (obviously the Countach) or first cars (a perfectly serviceable Polo)?

I'm quite tempted to get one of the first "nice" cars I had (Mk1 Audi TT) as they are under £5k now.

My brother had one of these (but his was black with an A-team style stripe down the side!).

1800cc engine, small hatchback, 4WD - it went like a rocket, and left many a hot-hatch of the day trailing behind when 'making progress' on country lanes!...

[img] [/img]

I always wanted one of these...

Nostalgia.... I had a Mk1 Escort Van (hand painted) for my first car. It was crap as are most of the above in comparison to modern cars. My van had drums all round and of course no power steering, air bags etc etc. I wanted a Mk1 Mexico but couldnt afford the insurance 🙁

This was the nearest I owned. 13K miles on the clock. (17 year old red head in the passenger seat) *sigh* 😆

Had a 1.6. Would love to have it again, although I suspect it would quickly become a money pit.

Otherwise also lusted after a Delta Integrale, although I suspect that would also be a money pit.

Always weirdly wanted one of these too:

I did! But a lack of enthusiasm for lying under cars and pouring money into them meant that the car was neglected in the end. Sold it for a song but at least it wasn't rotting in the driveway.

[img] [/img]

Great fun while it lasted though. Love driving Capris.

My first three cars were a 1974 VW Beetle SuperS, a Bay Window Westfalia Camper and a Mk1 Golf

Not mine, but virtually identical....

[img] [/img]

I miss that one the most, but I would have all of them back in a heartbeat 🙁

My first 'real' car after having a old T reg Mazda 323 to learn in and generally faff around with L plates.
[img] [/img]
Mine got written off after being hit by a drink driver, but if I could find one that had not rusted apart I would, great little fun car plus I could actually afford to run it now (not like when I was 18).
Oh, Alpha 114 Kilo Delta Unit, how I miss you.

I've had the Escorts, Fiestas etc and actually only got rid of a Mk 2 Polo and Mk 2 Golf which had been off road a couple of years ago.

Reason I got rid ? I'd got a modern car and, even just driving them at weekend etc, it still felt like driving a piece of.......compared to how a modern car drives / feels.

I had a MK5 Golf GTI at 21 and would probably have one again if it came with DAB and an auto box.

I recently picked up and drove a 1985 E28 5 Series 525E as a mate was using it as his wedding car.

It was so much fun to be in an old car, it ran really well and handled as you would expect an 80's motor to handle.

Would I swap it for our A3 sport back on a 64 plate probably not but would I have one as a second car yes!

It had the beginnings of light rust on most seams on the wings and bonnet but no proper rot.
