Spent most of the morning tracking down a highly elusive bug caused by uninitialised variable "A", which caused variable "B" to also go uninitialised (a function pointer) resulting in an impressive crash later on, but by that time variable "A" had been given the correct value thus covering its tracks.

On top of which the crashes only happened after a fully cold boot because the belatedly initialised value of "A" then persisted in RAM through resets.

All this in assembly code. With no debug interface to the hardware.

Writing a report trying to explain an a structural 'issue' we had on a vibration test - and then piecing together heaps of data from the structural analysis of the proposed fix even though it would have been fine if it had been made correctly in the first place.

Checking the Google Analytics and setting up goals for the latest website I've built (www.paincommunitycentre.org, if I can be so bold as to post it here!).

Also, moaning about the new ITSM software we've just implemented - I think if I had built it, I'd be looking for a new job...

Catching up on some studying while writing a project handover, before moving onto my next fun filled task of this week. Oh and rebuilding my laptop, drinking some coke, thinking about biking this weekend and sorting out the companies telephony during a BT outage. Who says men can't multi-task?

Anaesthetising a patient so the surgeon can replace a bone in his hand. it's in the not very interesting part of the operation at the moment. the surgeon would no doubt disagree.

Work out a practical way of managing re-usable source code for the European Space Agency:

1. The basic mission control software
2. The Earth Explorer mission variant
3. The Global Monitoring variant of the Earth Explorer variant
4. Three Sentinel mission variants of the Global Monitoring variant
5. Back compatible with the Aeolus and Swarm missions

It should be layered like Lasagne. But it's currently spaghetti.

variable "A", which caused variable "B" to also go uninitialised

Chris: you know you can use longer variables names in proper programming languages!? 😉

Waiting for my weekly 4.15 Wednesday conference call with a big client. It's always 50/50 as to whether the call goes well or the client decides to be awkward. Been with us for five years so far so think we doing the job right(ish)!

Then writing up notes and chilling.

Night ride at 8pm with a few mates.

Due at work in less than 3 hours, so now off for some kip.

I've done the school runs, looked after our 4 year old for an hour or so, walked the dog twice, sawed some wood and chopped kindling.

The Mrs will come in the night and ask why I've never emptied the dishwasher of course or done any other house hold chores.

Need to access work emails but forgot the URL for the server so it can wait until tonight.

Packing up to go home... but I've been doing virtualisation stuff, building a new server, dev'ing in VBA (Access 2000... horrible stuff), and doing pen testing on one of our systems. It's an interesting job, can't complain!

Spent most of my morning screaming at my year nine class to stop being horrible to each other.

Then had a really nice lesson with my small class of knackers, never seen disaffected kids use a dictionary so fast.

Then a semi ok lesson teaching students how to fill out their APP sheet to monitor their progress.

And then a good twenty minutes discussing with one student's tutor how he was the densest kid I had ever met, he's like a caractature of a stupid kid, a living dopey from the seven dwarfs.

Trying to translate some PLC ladders written in technical German so the HMI shows fault messages in english for the machine operators. I've had some highly amusing babble fish translations so far. Later I've got to get the cherry picker out and figure out whats wrong with one of the gas heaters on the roof. I'm not usually bothered about heights, but this thing wobbles and sways about a foot in each direction when at full height 🙁

Might dunk my chain and cassette in the solvent bath later before I leave for home. Thinking of changing from squirt wax to wet lube. 😕
