Hi all,

Chucking a few ideas around for next summer holidays (I'm a uni student), and something I'd like to do is visit Malaysia (mum is Malaysian and somehow I've not been yet).

Thinking head over for just under a month, spend half of it cousin-hopping, and would love to spend the other half working on a orang-utan conservation area or something of the sort?

Done a quick bit of looking around and the official deals (flights, accom etc) are all silly expensive, but I've heard of people just emailing the places directly, and getting their own flights out there, get a free bed, no pay, and then food is super cheap anyway.

Anyone got any experience of this kind of thing? Essentially trying to get an awesome experience for as cheap as possible 😛
Fact that I'm only going to be around for a couple weeks may not help though...

Any input would be great,

Duane.

Well, the missus and me have been to the Orangutan Sanctuary at Sepilok and we're keen supporters of the UK charity:

I know from their newsletters that they do actively look for volunteers, but I suspect they'd be looking for a much longer term commitment than two weeks.

Wouldn't hurt to give them a ring/email though.
