Wordle

I managed three this morning - but was lucky with my starting and second words (which I won't post just now as spoiler) but I am figuring out the best words to get the vowels nailed asap.

I think it’s often less helpful to have a bunch in the right place because you eliminate fewer letters on each attempt. For example, imagine if the answer is SCONE and you go:
NUTTY
GIVEN
PHONE
DRONE
OZONE
ALONE

Those starting words are not great, but I’m sure there are more plausible sequences that would have the same pattern where there are more possible words than you have chances left.

i can see what youre saying, but taking the above example tho, id say theyre poor choices of letters.
for starters i wouldnt choose a double letter in my starting word. or a 'v' or 'y' unless there was a good reason for it.

id far rather have correct letters than a greater choice. i think some words are just harder to pinpoint because of the different options in the first place. give me correct letters any time tho 😀

Also (unless you're in Hard mode) there's nothing to stop you trying a completely unrelated word which doesn't even contain previously yellow or green letters, in order to identify or eliminate as many new letters as possible. I guess that's a valid strategy, otherwise Hard mode wouldn't be a thing, so I'll give it a go next time I get 2+ letters on the first guess!

That was just meant to illustrate that you can have combinations of correct letters that allow more words than you have chances left. I was worried today's one would end up like that.

Tricky one. I did a tually look at the spoiler but only after I'd thought of the word.

how do you cheat?

You could look for an online crossword solver, set it to find all 5-letter words, with the letter(s) you have in the correct place and it will give you a list of possible words. Not much help if you haven't established a letter though.

I haven't tried it but it just says that, "Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses." I can't see that making it massively harder, maybe just take a bit longer to work through possibilities.

I think it'd make it a lot harder! Sometimes if I've got say 2 yellows in the first row, I'll just put in another word using a lot of (different) common letters to try and get some more yellows or a green and then work from there.

Same. Confused now. Doesn’t using clues make it easier than not using clues?

Not using letters though you know they are in the word means you can test for the presence of more untested letters in a single go.

Used standard first word I use, which came up with 2 yellow letters then absolute guess for second word which turned out to be correct. 100% luck

Tried the strategy of 3 totally different words for my first 3 guesses, which meant that I’d ruled in or out 15 letters by that point (on this occasion identifying all 5 letters meaning I just needed to solve an anagram for guess 4!)
Coming up with three words having all unique letters was actually harder than just solving the Wordle normally most days 😀
