Read something about it at the weekend as the antidote to binge culture. It's one a day, take a few mins to work out, good way to just take a break.
I think anything less than three is pure luck, three requires some genuine thought./excuses.

Although going to the 6th line give you a feeling you may not solve it it is unlikely you won't, given that you have used around 20 of the 26 letters and have a few that are in correct place by then the options left with the few letters no used before are pretty low.
Took me 6 today but I think only one word was an option by that time.

I think it's often less helpful to have a bunch in the right place because you eliminate fewer letters on each attempt. For example, imagine if the answer is SCONE and you go:
NUTTY
GIVEN
PHONE
DRONE
OZONE
ALONE
Those starting words are not great, but I'm sure there are more plausible sequences that would have the same pattern where there are more possible words than you have chances left.
