Sochi is Vladamir Putin's favourite holiday destination.

This fact, and the Winter Games being hosted there despite Sochi being one of the warmer parts of Russia, are purely coincidental.

Now move along citizen.

The purpose of holding the games is 50% prestige and 50% corruption opportunities. Putin doesn't need Olympics to get his holiday destinations spruced up: the local government does it anyway (see what happened with his resort in central Russia) and he wasn't inconvenienced in the slightest by how things were before!

That wasn't the point I was making. It's more he had the games held somewhere he likes going, despite it's possible climate based inappropriateness.

I thought* the course was agreed to be pretty good considering (not seen it myself). They may be called MTBs but only a tiny minority actually end up on mountains and afaik very few UK xc race courses are on bona fide mountains.

Snowsports with dodgy snow is a bit shit tho.

*could be mistaken

Ridden it? It's not flat!

A seaside resort does seem a little bit of an odd choice, level playing field though innit, everyone's got warm weather and crap snow!
