Right, I've been looking at demijohns as I want to try making a wine. I notice there are plastic ones that look identical to the 5 litre bottl of water I have under my desk, down to the same handle and contouring. (obviously minus the airlock). What's the benefit of glass over the cheapo plastics? Is there any reason I shouldnt just rinse this plastic one and buy an airlock and grommet?

Probably no real difference other than plastic is less robust. However, don't spend several quid on a new glass demijohn. Go to your local recycling centre and pay about 25 - 50 pence each for some old glass ones. I'm looking forwards to some apple pressing action in the next few days and then laying down several gallons of next years scrumpy-in-progress.

No, you could just use your empty 5 litre plastic mineral water bottles, no problem. I'll be using a couple of old plastic dustbins for this years batch of scrumpy,'cos I'm using my fermenting bin for some plum wine.:-)

Right, well assuming I sterilise all parts as required I think I might have a crack at this. If I can find some glass ones I will use them, otherwise it's newfangled plastic for me!
