.... doesn't shut down on my computer. I have to disconnect it from the mains and take the battery out to it turn off. Is this the end of my computer?
If you have the XP disc you can load it in & you'll be offered the option to either perform a fresh installation or repair itself.
now i'm no IT guru (plumber actually) but i can't resist tinkering with stuff...so i'v had to do this a few times over the years.
I would back up everything, re-install windows xp, then see what happens.
Always rule out the software option first before looking at hardware issues. I have had many pc's running xp experience many problems, but its usually updates or software related, easily fixed. 🙂
Don't do that yet.
Try windows update and it could be an update prob.
Also try windows live care to repair your registry.
Task manager may show you the program causing the prob too.
Have you installed any new software lately? You can use the 'go back' feature to return your system to a point before the problem started.
Is it just a shutdown problem or are there other things going on too?
If you have other things that are not working as they should be, its far easier to re-install xp.
Windows live care in my experience causes more problems that it solves.
Run the xp update first to see if there are any new updates, drivers etc.
The cause could be a list of things, unsigned drivers, registry issues, software, even spyware etc.
Throw it in a pond and buy a Mac 😀
