Windows Defender tells me it is turned off and should be turned on. I try to turn it on but get timed out. Any advise or observations would be gratefully received.BTW it says my virus info is up to date.

Have you got MSE installed? I think that turns Defender off. What Windows version?

As johnners says, Defender isn't needed if you use MSE, at least in Windows 7.
