I’ve just been helping to sort a load of donations out, it seems lots of people dig about in the back of the cupboard for their out of date stuff and send it off to charity (also their unwanted tat from the back of their wardrobes).

Some of it is usually well meaning, a shop(?) has sent maybe 100 bars of chocolate that went out of date end of Feb - obviously it’s still fine to eat, as are all the tins that are only a month or so past their date.

Is there anywhere that will actually take them and use them or are they going to end up in a skip? 😞

I have given tinned stuff to foodbanks where it is just past its 'best before' date with no problem.  Obviously nothing that is past its 'use by' date.  Bigger charities might have a stricter policy, but in my experience small local food banks are grateful for it.  I should point out - I have given them fresh stuff too, not just ancient stuff from the back of the cupboard!

Cheers, I think BBE & Use by are treated differently.

Tins & dried food always (?) has use by, BBE is for fresh I think. We haven’t got fresh items to deal with thankfully.

BBE is eatable after the date, chocolate may have a cocoa butter bloom on it. Use by must not enter the food chain. Canned is usually ok as long as the can is not bloated.

... and it's still fine to eat, just looks funny.
