[#13535526]

I have an old PC (4th gen i7) running Windows 10 (on the 1 year extended updates program).

As of this morning I'm getting the dreaded BSOD & an ACPI BIOS ERROR message.

The BSOD appears the minute the Windows logo appears. I've reset BIOS defaults but no joy. It BSOD booting from CD & won't enter Safe Mode, Automatic Repair or anything else, so can't roll back.

Was working perfectly yesterday but did a big Net Framework update.

Completely stuck so any ideas appreciated.

If it was a problem with Black Widows 10 you could look it up on the web?

The web suggests resetting bios settings which I've done.

I get a BSOD booting from an installation CD so I'm guessing it's a hardware fault & I'm screwed 😔

Yes, it's possible. I've had that error when I had a motherboard fault. However the windows installer does try and read the hard drive so it's also possible its just a failing or corrupted drive.

If you have another PC with a DVD burner, download the Ubuntu installer ISO and burn it.  Just see if it will boot to the desktop/installer screen. (Don't start the actual installation!)  If that fails then you probably have a hardware fault.

Have you set it to boot from the CD drive first in your BIOS?

Some other stuff to try...

Unplug any non essential connected devices (printers, USB devices etc) > reboot.

Also remove any sound or graphics cards > reboot.

If you have more than one SSD/HDD disconnect all apart from the OS drive > reboot

Then try the RAM, remove one stick and try and boot it, then try the other(s)

If you can somehow get back into Windows there's a program called WhoCrashed that can analyse BSOD dump files to help you pinpoint the problem.

What happens if you disable / hide TPM in BIOS?

Ditto, Secure Boot.

Is it a desktop or a laptop?

Is it overclocked?

It's not overclocked and I've removed all cards and run from the onboard graphics with the same result. Windows firing up seems to be triggering something.

Likewise I've tried to boot from CD with the other disks disconnected. It gets a way in the there's a brief BSOD and it restarts.

It's tempting to blame yesterday's update but I can't see it being this booting from CD with the boot drive disconnected.

I'll try disabling the TPM & Secure Boot.

When I get access to a working PC I'll download & USB install image & see if I can go from there.

Hirens Boot CD saved me a good few times back in the day. Not sure if it's still updated though.

@Cougar Well done that man! Disabling the TPM has done the trick.

4th Gen. i7s are so old they don't have a TPM but there a socket for one on the mobo. & I picked up a TPM 2 card some years back.

Anyway, thank you I'm not sure I would have thought of doing that.

-- Edit --

I can actually leave the TPM enabled, but if I select the BIOS option that instructs it to use the TPM (whether it's enabled or not) it crashes.

To be fair the system's ancient & I seem to have lost interest in gaming* so I'm lucky it's still ticking over.

* Watched The Witcher 4 trailer yesterday and am aware that Elder Scrolls 6 is in the pipeline, so that might all change (or I might prefer a new bike).

Wahey! Seeing the thread title I did think "you really need Cougar for this one"...

Question - wtf prompted it to cack itself at this particular time though, after years of being fine? Had you changed a setting?

Clicked on this thread hoping for some STW witticisms based on the thread title typo. Disappointed.

Aside from the very first reply?

That is a very good question and I'd probably need it on the bench to go any further.  If I were to guess then given the date my first port of call would be Windows Update.  As it's W10 ESU you almost certainly had a security rollup patch two days ago.

After looking at my own W10 ESU box,

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/may-12-2026-kb5087544-os-builds-19045-7291-and-19044-7291-579dfaac-2664-45cc-9bd8-e6999fcc8836

Probably. 😁

You could remove this.  On pros vs cons balance, I'd almost certainly leave it alone unless I had a compelling reason to require TPM on an out-of-mainstream-support box.  I suspect that the "fix," such as it is, would be a clean install of W11.  Again on balance, I'm unconvinced that I'd be falling over myself to do that either.

Ah yes, I hadn't spotted the typo (I'm not very good typing on the phone).

There was a large Net Framework update yesterday and I used the PC quite a bit following this without issue, the BSOD appeared the first boot this morning.

The TPM part of my Bios appears to have vanished entirely now but at least things seem to be working which is the main thing.

Well it was definitely the TMP 2.0 module, no amount of tweaking would get it past the BSOD (although the bios recognised it). An older TMP 1.2 in its place works well.
