The water butt at my studio has almost overnight developed a horrible smelly cloudy scum on the water surface.
The studio's pitched roof has two sides with a butt gathering water at each. The south facing side is still nice and clean. The north facing side seemed to collect some cherry blossom in the gutter, could that be responsible for the smell?
Dead body?
HuhHuhHuhHuh!!
He said "butt"....
Something's growing in it, and the organic material is rotting and fermenting.
is it covered?
mine seem to develop all sorts of algae if not completely covered.
I tend to empty them and clean out all the dead snails and stuff once a year. Last time I found half a dead mouse floating in it.

The tops are open. I fear something may have died and fallen in.
I prefer squirrels.
Although they may contain nuts, so not for those with allergies.
If you're using it for watering plants I find a bit of organic matter helps. I always dollop a cow pat or some horse muck in mine, cheap Tomorite.
If it's a breeding ground for mozzies, a few glugs of cooking oil on the top stops them.
